The local track has an off street race Friday, think of trying out the zxr. But the gearing is WAY too tall. Should have seen @kiffsta for a sprocket or 2 while I was there. But going to look at running a hyosung rear wheel with a racing slick to improve my launch - instead of riding the clutch for the 1/8 mile.

I blame everyone talking about @Linkin run time.

Don't run with a 15T front, the bike will just bog off the line and you'll never make it up on the rest of the run (well a 100kg rider won't make it up!). I run 14/48 and that's the best for even launching and running. I'm guessing that's what Linkin runs too.

14/48 is the standard gearing I believe.

Not actually sure what I have on there currently, but it does about 9000rpm at 100km/h

I just counted: 15/40 on mine.

I thought that was standard. That's me in 4th.

Damn, 15/40 is super tall. That's a theoretical speed of 240km/h in 6th at 16,000rpm

    14/48 is a final drive ratio of 3.43 / 1
15/40 is a final drive ratio of 2.67 / 1, it give you 28.6% less torque than standard, and 28.6% more top speed, and use's 5 less link's (pin's) in your chain (101 link's instead of 106)

Wow! I guess that's good if you're riding long distances at highway speeds, but at the drags you'll be lucky to cover the 1/8 mile in under 11 seconds...even if you're a jockey!

2 hour drive, $75 entry, 2 hours home.. Entry seems a bit much. Is that standard cost? $10 gate, $15 andra day license, $50 for off street/test and tune. I could stay home and save for circuit racing 2035, when I can afford it. :-D :-(

Calder Park Raceway is $75 for street meet entry for cars and bikes. Test & Tune there is $100.

Heathcote Park Raceway is $60 for Test & Tune.

Ballarat Drag Racing (1/8 mile on airstrip) is $70 to race

Wilby Park Drag Racing (1/8 mile goat track) is $45 to race - some of the flood ways on the ride to Texas reminded me of lane 2 at this venue...you can literally see vehicles partially disappear towards the end of the track!

Portland is $120 to race (1/4 mile)

Well, I've come up with a handful of excuses not to go tonight, but I seen they have off street nights nearly every month, and an all bike meet in early July. So I'll save my money until then.

All bike meets are great. I wish I could get up there. What's the local track?

Okay, today I managed to get to Heathcote Park Dragway for another crack at the 1/4 mile. When I first started racing the ZXR250 it was to learn about the mechanics of motorcycles and to have some fun. I set myself some performance targets...a sub-2 second 60foot time; an 8-something 1/8 mile time and a 13-something 1/4 mile time. Alas, while the bike has a good power-to-weight ratio, adding my bloated body to the equation meant most, if not all, of those goals remain out of reach. Put your Kleenex away as today was a pretty good day. 18 months ago, Murdo built a CBR250 MC19 drag bike. I knew he would make it fast and make it good. He did, and he recently set the "Open" class 2fiftycc 1/8 mile ET record at 9.31 seconds. A great effort and a testimony to his tuning, building and racing skills. So, the main goal for me today was to see if I could get close or beat Murdo's time. My secondary goal was to see if I could get near Linkin's 1.99 second 60 foot time.

Well, today I went armed with a different TCI from a 1999 ZXR250C Malaysian "unrestricted" 240kph speedo bike. Hoping that it might miraculously give me some much needed mid-range power. After a few runs in the 9.5-9.6 range I concluded it wasn't doing anything special and changed back to my trusty C model TCI. I got plenty of runs in today as there was a small turn-up. Three bikes in total...me, a Victory running mid-12's and an Australian Superbike spec 600cc GSXR. I was intrigued to see the superbike as it was still setup for Phillip Island and the "Jockey" was a young man with mum and dad (tuner) there working on the bike. He'd never run the bike down a drag strip and the tire warmers might have been a bit out of place at the strip, but he did manage to run a mid-10 at 149mph! He was using the drag strip to work on his launches, so people telling him to lower the tire pressure in the rear was wasted as that's not what he was there for.

Anyway, I'll get to the point. I did manage to run some reasonable times with my trusty TCI in the bike. As I was going for outright performance, I stopped looking at the tree as soon as the first yellow lit up and just focused on my revs and weight (no laughing) distribution etc. It's the most awkward feeling to look away from the tree. The first few times I did it, it put me off more than anything else.

Eventually, I ran a 9.19 time and I did also manage a 2.03 60 Foot time on my last run (where I kept my eyes on the tree). A long way from the featherweight 2fiftycc record (8.84), but still respectable me thinks.

I have a few mods I want to make to the bike in an effort to go quicker/faster. The COP mod is a must, so have ordered some bits to do this. I'll have to give the bike a thorough going over as some fluid was on the trailer floor when I got home. Didn't check it too hard as it was getting dark, but it didn't feel like oil. Plus, I think the clutch might also want some love.

Still haven't achieved any of my original performance goals, but I'm closer now thanks to people like Murdo. Cheers Mate.

    I'm bike number 120...

Great work.. persistence pays off in the end.. and its probably cheaper and easier to add performance than to remove weight :) Thats what I keep telling myself

I agree. When it comes to going on a diet, it's more "won't" power than will power for me!

Back at the track (HPR) doing some more testing. Good variety of bikes at Heathcote today. Several HDs, 2 Busas, an extended swingarm Busa, a GSXR600 ASBK bike (see June 3rd post in this thread) and an 80cc 2-stroke.

I was testing as I have a new engine in the bike. The ZXR250C engine has been swapped out for a ZXR250A engine, but I’m still running the C loom and TCI. Carbs are also the same as what I was running on the C engine, so just finding my way with this combo. I was at HPR 2 weeks ago to test the new engine, but the day was rained out, so today I had to stack my changes. I don’t like doing this as it doesn’t tell me what change accounted for what performance. Today I ran COP for the first time and I will be sticking with this setup as the bike runs much more consistently. Can’t say it felt faster or more powerful, but the timeslips don’t lie. Ended up with a (1/8 mile) best of 9.11 @ 73.58mph (118.42kph). Next change will be to change over to a ZXR250A loom and TCI to see what that does.

Oh, by the way, what do you get when you put a 35kg rider on an 80kg 80cc 2-stroke bike? Answer: mid-15’s at 88mph! Good work young man (standing next to his bike below).
