The 2025 Postie Bike Challenge is about to start and one of our members (@jmw76) is 'competing' in it. Basically, it's Brisbane to Canberra the long way (3,000km via the outback) and it takes place between the 28th of September & the 7th of October 2025.

For those interested in knowing more, there is a website https://www.postiebikechallenge.org/

And anyone wanting to keep track of the event, there is a website one of the participants has setup. https://www.leslies.id.au/

Years ago, I met a young Japanese man on the Spirit of Tasmania. He was riding around Australia on a Postie Bike. He had been on the road for months and was heading to Tasmania to do that as part of his adventure. He had limited English, but I was fascinated by his trip and the obstacles he had overcome so far and what he still had ahead of him; a brave and adventurous young man.

    2026 event looks interesting...

Brisbane – North Queensland Gulf country – Darwin 2026

The Brisbane to Darwin route is special, not just because it was our first adventure in 2002, but because it travels such a variety of landscapes.

Starting from Brisbane we take a wonderfully wooded exit from the city area through subtropical and rainforest-lined roads. Over the next few days the vegetation starts to thin as we head further west and north. Temperatures also start to change for the warmer and the humidity drops. As we approach the gulf country and northern Queensland the heat increases further and the land increasingly arid. Moving into the Northern territory and again further north we start to enter patches of tropical Savannah.

Our route will include small towns, remote outposts and roads whilst also navigating some must see experiences along the way. A road trip through central Queensland wouldn’t be complete without a chance to see the Qantas museum and Stockman’s hall of fame.

On travelling through the Northern Territory we will also get the chance for a swim at Mataranka Springs, known for its warm, spring-fed thermal pools in a landscape of shaded palms.

Brisbane to Darwin is our longest adventure in terms of distance. We made some minor route changes for the Brisbane – Darwin route for 2026 over previous trips. Basically we removed a deteriorated road that was not postie bike friendly and replaced it with another in better condition, if you can call a single lane sealed road with raggedy edges “better”. This new remote road is near 400km long, no facilities, no fuel and so is also very isolated.

Our destination is Darwin, near 4000km away from our start point. Our final night will include a celebration dinner at a resort hotel. Why not stay on in Darwin and visit some of the tourist sites after completing the Postie Bike Challenge in 2026….

Adventure is in the journey rather than the destination and this is one not to be missed. At times you will ride with a group; sometimes alone; you will feel remote; a million miles away from civilization; there will be long days on the bitumen; your dirt riding skills might be tested; some days you will travel at full speed (75km/hr!!!) and others will be spent negotiating narrow roads at 30-40km/hr; YOUR MISSION: keep your small motorcycle going for the near 4000 kilometres!
