Hey guys. I'm new to the forum.

    I picked up a 64' Yamaha Catalina

    Kicks over.

Anyone know what kind of oil I need? Engine oil and 2 stroke oil?

I'm thinking carb clean, plugs maybe points.

    These bikes have a battery?

Wow, that's a wee ripper. Looks like she has spent some time outside, I'm not sure I would trying to start it without some investigative work , maybe whip the head and barrels off to see the condition. These old 2 bangers use trans oil in the crank case and have a autolube system to mix oil and fuel. All of these areas should be cleaned and checked before attempting to start it otherwise you may damage it.

I don't have a manual for this bike, but they can cheaply sourced on-line

trans lube in gearbox, 20/50 engine oil will do. for engine you need 2 stroke oil in side tank but if you are trying to start then put a litre 0f premix in tank as a safety precaution.wish you were closer and i would visit as i used to ride the earlier model!!!! yds2

Cool. So I'll pick up some 20/50 oil.

As for the 2 stroke oil, yama-lube? Or maybe a brand on the market?

As for premix, ratio? 40-50:1 ish?

Yes the bike was on cape cod. So salt air got it hard. I have many show bikes, I was gonna restore this. Just get it to smoke people out at the bike shows this summer

pre mix i would look at 25-1 ratio. this was the standard pre mix back then.outboard 2 stroke oil is good as it has ammonia in it to clean out carbon.

    Welcome.
Two stroke mineral oil in the cleaned out tank but be sure to bleed the oil line at the pump so you don't get an air lock. When you start the engine hold the cable up to give full pump stroke for a few minutes to clear the line of old oil and air bubbles. The premix in the tank (about 1 quart of mix should be enough to get started) is a good idea too.
Use a normal four stroke motorcycle oil in the gearbox as most car oils have friction modifiers that may cause your clutch to slip.
Definately need a carb strip and clean. Air filter may have turned to dust so needs to be checked. Make sure the mufflers are clear too. New plugs and check your points. Need a battery to give engine spark.
I restored a YDS-5 a while ago and there was a lot of NOS still available in US.

Looks like a good bike to restore, you even have the original pump under the tank.

Could anyone explain to me the difference. I'm trying to track down parts. I see on ebay the terms yds3,ym1,yds5 etc. if my bike is a y23 and the motor is D9 are things like Piston rings, carb kits, and gaskets the same?

Also my compression was low, so I pulled the cylinders. I think I can do STD rings. But on ebay all I see are yds3 Yamaha sets. Are those the same?

Also,I see a battery spot, but absolutely no terminals any where. Could this model maybe have not had one?

What is y23? Do you mean YDS3?
The YDS3 and YDS5 are the same for pistons, just clutch is different.
YM series are 305cc and will not fit.
Needs battery to make coils fire.

By y23 I mean on the neck were the vin number is it says y23-the numbers. So I figured this is the y23 model. Pardon me for the dumb question, but I can assure you that I'm saving this from the scrap yard .

must have a battery to fire, stuffed battery and will only run on one cylinder.wiring should be there or is missing. follow generator wires up to rectifier and on to battery.

See the frame says y23, is this the same thing as the yds3? Hard to understand with ebay listing titles, because people put in everything to enhance the title search
