hey y'all, was hoping one of the experts could give their opinion on pro's cons' of 17 inch rear wheel vs 18 inch rear wheel? Obviously tyre choice for the 17s, but then what about the geometry changes, handling etc? I presume there was a reason why they spec'd 18s originally? I imagine an 18 rear would have a more aggressive feel since the ride height would be higher? Cheers!
Have to measure the overall height of wheel and tyre combo to see how it will affect geometry. if it is taller it will sharpen up the front end, if lower if will slow down the steering of the front. Whatever the difference, compensate by raising or lowering the forks to achieve the standard value. 17" is better for tyre choices
Something like this as I understand. As tyres got wider they also got taller even with low profiles. Weight increases dramatically, which makes the bike harder to turn, accelerate and brake, so make the wheel smaller and you can run wider tyres without increasing the total diameter.
It was thinking like this which gave us 16in front wheels. I find it interesting that given no regulatory limits the factories eventually settled on 16.5in diameter wheels. Which have not made it to the public market. At this point in time there is no real alternative to 17's. Sizes, compounds price and availability all count. The last time I put an 18 on a current race bike - vs a classic - it was to get a longer footprint than the 17 usually run. Didn't work. Still too much wheelspin.
