Hi all, here is a new member with a new story about a zxr250a. But a very familiar story so if you too are going through this do not fear, have fun and enjoy the ride I have had this bike in our family since my 19 year old son bought it in 2011, history unknown however the sump plug has been drilled... He spent about 1200 bucks getting it up to actual WOF standards, plus first attempts at getting it to idle well. Brakes, tyres, sprokets, chain, bulbs etc, you know the usual dodgy wof to sell a bike but it did go like a rocket. Due to various reasons it has been periodically stored and ridden in the last 4 years, and i don't think that has helped this situation. First two problems for me, the carbs and the tacho. I have other posts about those on the forum but i will probably just write all my updates here now. Needless to say i have replaced the seal kit in the carbies with help from this forum and going through the processes of sorting out the tacho.. Read on below..... I hooked everything up and primed the carbs, she started and ran the best she has in months! Still some small problems to keep me tinkering for a while- went for test ride but had to return- leaking fork seal and rear brake not there....... But there was power there and plenty. Still wont settle into a consistant idle under choke so i try and lift the idle and use as little choke as possible. There is also in inconsistant missfire, cylinder 3 has a cool pipe under these conditions. I pulled plugs from 3 and 4 and compared but there appeared no difference ie no unburnt fuel on number 3. Checked the spark all good, so reassembled with plugs 3 and 4 swapped over. Ran on all four at idle and settled into a nice idle. Ran on all four on the test ride but the miss comes back. Going to get new plugs and ignition lead. Already done the coils but not the cdi. I resealed the exhaust as that was leaking around the can seal and a bolt was missing. I'm sure an exhaust leak will also affect the engine tune, plus it sounds better Radiator has a slow leak too so that will have to come off, hopefully can be repaired without having to buy a new one if even available Righto, off to remove the rear brake and fork, happy spannering!
Sounds similar to mine haha They are bast area of bikes but once you get it all running and good , shouldn't have to many issues ! once there are cleared, cleaned and good to go it's just basic maintenance from there onwards
Backyardkiwi. Just a few checks first. Plugs in the right cylinders? 1 coil does #1 and #4 cylinder other coil does #2 and #3 Keep at it. I spent a couple years getting my bike ironed out and it's totally worth it. You can do a test on the taco by connecting the wire that goes to the IC igniter to the positive terminal. There are more detailed instructions in the manual. You can download the C model manual (similar to A in most ways) from the resources section. You have to become a premium member before you can download resources but having the manual is really helpful.
Hi guys here is a quick update I removed the exhaust and resealed the manifold, retightened the carb manifold hose clamps, fitted new plugs, flushed the fuel tank, new brake pads in the rear and bled the system. I removed just the leaky fork and today i stripped it down thanks to utube and delboys! Tomorrow i hope to track down a seal and some oil and then reassemble. Then just waiting on front disc pads But i couldnt help myself and started her up on the stands, popped into life instantly Thats a good sign. Still running on only 3 cylinders but it isnt that obvious to the ear. Seems to improve and pick up tat 4th cylinder as the engine warms up. Still have not been able to road test and check under load rrrr patience grasshopper........
Definatley sounds like you have a tight valve clearance and will just get enough clearance when the engine is hot to seal and make cylinder fire. When you buy fork seals they usually come as a pair, so good idea to replace both as the other seal wont be long before it is worn and leaks too.
Thanks for the advice. Im going to get a kit for the forks it has the seals and the bushes too. While im waiting i will go over the valve clearances Update next week Cheers
