I sometime run an Ad on Gumtree chasing 250cc bikes in exchange for cash. I had recently decided to have a break from playing but having offloaded a few bikes, I figured there was a project out there for me, or at the very least something to part out while I look for a something interesting. So, I posted my Gumtree wanted ad on Wednesday and received a text a few hours later, the seller had an Across and wanted $200 for it. I jumped at the chance and arranged to pick it up last night. Alas yesterday I received a call from School, my son had was involved in a sporting accident and had hit his head, I raced out to the school, realised he was in a bad way and took him to Hospital. After a 5 hours wait he was diagnosed with concussion and because he still had blurry vision and memory loss he was transferred to a larger hospital for observation. The good news is that he was finally released at 3am this morning with the "All Clear" So today, I contacted the seller and arranged to meet him at 7pm, I walked in and he had a Ninja 250 and the Across, the story goes that his Dad had dropped the Across about a year ago so he bought a Ninja 20. While the across slid on the road, the side cover wore through and she dumped its oil. From what I can see the chain guard is missing, the side cover is damaged and the key is missing, that's about it. Its been in dry storage for the past 12 months. Anyone who owns an across knows that the key is very important to accessing anything on the bike, I had to damage the seat lock in order to get the seat off, but I have a spare so its all good. With the seat off, I opened the trunk, nothing in there, sometimes you get some cool stuff, I once bought An across with a boot full of tools . I have pulled the ignition out and will drop by a locksmith tomorrow and see if they can cut me a key and see if she runs. The panels are a tad beat, but Im hoping she runs.
Well, a bit of progress, I pulled the stator cover as it was cracked and fitted a spare, I also changed the oil. The locksmith isn't open on weekends so I have pulled the old lock apart and removed the electrics, I have dodgied it up so I can at least start it. I had a go, but the starter motor wasn't spinning, I swapped it out for a spare and she fired up even with 1 year old fuel. Next job is to pull the carbs down and get her running 100% Slowly , slowly but I am winning
Okay, carbs have been threebonded.... ( Threebond should do a sticker like that) , and all the jets and emulsion tubes were cleaned. I reassembled the bike , drained the fuel and replaced it with fresh fuel, and started it up but there was a rattle in the head, I pull the cam chain tensioner out and it seemed bigger to me than I remembered so I found one in the spares box, fitted that its now quiet as a church mouse. Next step, fit the airbox and balance the carbs.
How did you get the emulsion tubes out?? I couldn't get mine out and by the looks of it didn't want to try as it all looks pretty rooted.
make sure the tops of the carbs are off including the slides and needle, then flip them over remove the main jets and the washer, I then use a Philips head with a largish head and inset into the bottom of the emulsion tube and give them a light tap to loosen them , push from the bottom up and they come out Chris
Cool, thanks mate. I'll try that. (I wasn't even sure they came out, they looked that stuck in there. lol)
lol kiff, your video. you sound like such a happy go lucky dude, "oh u know uhh just uhh getting some disco! My glass is half full, seen much WORSE ya know what I'm saying uhh so" *rev, rev, REV* #siteplug.
I did them again after this pic was taken, they are now closer. I have been in Rocky for work for the past few days, so my plane landed early so I went over to the locksmith and picked up my lock and new key, prices have jumped, I usually pay $40 - $45 but they wanted $75, bit harsh but I needed it. I thought the big test will be if she starts after leaving it a few days, guess what, bit of choke and away she went.
