Okay, so my zxr stalled on me a few nights back, & wouldn't start if I had choke on and was giving it some throttle.. There is a huge tapping sound from what seems to be the top of the motor (cam chain, or valves), but disappears when on the clutch friction zone.. It's very very noticible on idle and on choke on a morning. What may the problem be? carbs are cleaned, I run Shell 95 and I have done so since the carby rebuild, 3000km's ago. I am about 1000 km's away from a oil change, starter is good, just needing some help.. cheers.
Hey I watch your YouTube videos haha I haven't had the top end of my zxr apart yet so I'm no expert at all on that engine, but I'd say check the valve clearances, sounds like they could be too wide. Good luck!
Upload a video. If it's a "ticking" sound it's probably valves. A grinding sound cam chain or tensioner, but if it's a clear "knock" it's probably something else, something worse like bottom end...
These old 250cc 4 cyl's are designed for 91 octane, other than that, it may be the valve clearances have tightened such that the bike will not start. It can happen. You should check your valve clearances anyway though.
@cantafforda600 you're a subscriber?! I will get the video tomorrow. The weird is it will not hold idle.. revs don't get stuck (like when you rev it up it doesnt take ages to come back down), it makes a ticking/tapping sound from the top of the motor, bottom end sounds fine, but I can get a video anyways. Cheers all. Fingers crossed I get this going because I hate catching busses to work hahah.
Could be the tensioner. They are known for dying. A GPX250 one will fit, but examine the existing one to see if it's fully extended
It's always hard through a camera because some noises appear louder and some quieter compared to listening in person
sounds terrible, take the rocker cover off and check the cam chain, even if it was cam chain related it wouldnt cause it to stall and be hard to start.
if the tapping goes away when you get load on the clutch it might be clutch related, bearing or something.
The tensioner is all the way out. Do you think this one would fit? Like it's for a EX250(Ninja 250r).. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/APE-KT25...0-NINJA-250-/231629993987?hash=item35ee393803
i had this rattle on mine... I pulled out the cam tensioner and deliberately over stretched the inner spring to experiment , I probably stretched it about an extra 4mm, put it back into the bike and the rattling went away... So I know at least that my tensioner guides are very well worn. once that rattle went I could hear if the tappets were noise , and in my case yes a little. So off the cam cover will come and I will check clearances... problem is if the seats are worn I will never know unless I pull the head off, in which case it will be a regrind...assuming they aren't poked ! or the guides aren't worn etc.... for some reason the previous owner of mine decided that oil needs to be thick ( aka never changed ) ......so thats a good indicator for the condition the internals are likely to be in. Cheers
