does anyone know were to get the two copper coloured sleeves with the teflon coating on the inner surface that the chrome extension slides on from. (their inside the fork) yamaha dealer said couldnt get them any more. does anyone know who makes the forks eg. ohlins etc or if some other bikes forks are compatible sleeve sizes with the fzr's.
some one somewhere has got to make them.

I'm in the same boat - have been looking for them myself. If you do find out, I'd be very keen to hear? I'll let you know if I find any too, but not looking good over here to be honest.

Do you think they could be re'tefloned?

From experience all NZ Yamaha dealerships are completely useless when it comes to parts.
I get everything for my 250 and 1000 Genesis offshore now. I know one of the ZXR front ends is a direct bolt on for the FZR250. Email every wreckers you can find in NZ, you never know what it turns up

I hear ya there Jay my experience has been the same. not so much for real common simple stuff but the more rare, old or specific a part is there useless. its like they only source parts from yamaha and thats it, and if yamaha dont have it then nobody does. do they even realise theres a world of aftermarket and equivalents out there. and they bias towards the big bikes to. thanks for the zxr mod appreciate it.

Ahaha, was wondering what your username was..

Yeah, I haven't had any luck in getting them from anywhere yet - I'll get those other ones back off Yamaha and back to you so you can at least put the forks together again.

Jay - any idea which zxr it is?

I have a related question. I plan to take my bike to a shop for a suspension rebuild with new fork seals and springs (and thicker oil maybe, like 15w), are there any parts (seals, bushings, sleeves, etc.) that are still available (online) and that I should buy before bringing the bike there?

I only found oil seals online - they were much cheaper to get myself than what they were going to cost from the shop (~$20 NZ vs $60), pyramid parts.co.nz I think?
However, check that where ever you are getting them done is ok with putting in parts supplied - some places charge more labour in these instances as they don't get a mark up on the parts themselves.

I would imagine oil would be cheaper from repco etc than from the shop too

Don't know what model ZXR it is mate, think its one of the newer two banger models though. Will pay to do a search for it.
Quick question, was your bike damaged in the earthquake? heaps of them were getting flicked off on trademe cheap as for fairing damage.

As for the guy that wants to put 15w in his forks I highly reccommend that you don't. These bikes took 7w stock and 15w will probably have a negative effect on the handling. I got 390mL of 9w in my 3LN and she handles mean for my weight.

hey jay im just curious were did you get your "These bikes took 7w stock" figure from. i cant find that spec anywhere. the only one i founud was 10w.

also i didnt know you could get such small variations in oil weights eg.2.5w, 4w, 7.25w, 9 etc
i agree that the factory weight fork oil is what these forks were designed and intended for but it actually dosent hurt to experiment with dif weights to achieve dif effects eg. slightly thicker oil increases damping making for a slightly firmer ride. If you've changed the oil and now find you've got a very harsh ride over sharp bumps, you've probably gone too far. id say experimenting within +or- 5 weight from factory oil is ok. ive been running 15w oil for 5 years now and never had any problems with it but i wouldnt go any higher. then again these are pretty crude suspension devices compared to todays technology.

Hahaha pulled it off another post on this forum. Looks like I have been corrected though hahahaha. I changed the oil in mine 2 weeks ago after I failed my WOF for excessively spoungey forks. Gotta get the bike road worthy so I can sell it!

all good dude

Dontz gave me a really good easy to understand site on suspension. its really good to have up in your bookmarks list for when you need a reminder or answers about certain things eg. theory, mods, experimenting. very handy

Nah, I didn't have this bike when the earthquakes hit - I don't think it went over though just with the side of town it was on at the time? I need new fairings for mine but I'm going to but some new ones off ebay I think, easier to get the whole lot as mine have really had it

well who would have known. just get the (IPC) illustrated parts cataloguepdf file from this site, look for the part that’s applicable to your bike and punch them into google, compare prices on multiple sites and buy them its that easy lol. ill be doing this more often now from the comfort of my own bedroom, screw Yamaha dealer
