G'day to all FZR250 members.

Im Dazza, from Perth (Aus)

Got myself an FZR, she's the 1989 model FZR250R, near all original, brought with only 5,696km on the clock.
I'm the 1st Aussie owner as it had been imported from japan early this year (2010)

I've got to know it well, she gets to 100kph in 5.5 seconds (2nd gear) and tops out at 160kph - 16,000rpm (5th gear) and i've still got to get into 6th so how do I go about un-restricting her? I felt rather let down haha!

Im running Bridgestone's front and rear, they have plenty of grip.

New muffler is arriving to my door sometime this week, 2inch straight through with removable baffle. So ill let you know how that go's.

Other than all that, my next 'mod' will be a rear race stand so I can clean my rims and lube the chain with a little more ease =].

I will post a picture of my FZR in the 'post a pic of your bike' thread.

Will look forward to seeing more as the work continues. Might just need a general tune, air filter etc.

160km/h top speed isn't too shabby. The only way i managed to top that was down a hill and drafting a big bore bike. If i recall, with a downhill slope and drafting assistance managed to hit ~180 in 6th. The problem is the poor FZR250 just isn't cut out for that kind of torture. Jumping onto a 1000cc modern sports bike will have you doing the same speed as you change to second gear. ;)

If you are after more top end power (and speed) then be prepared to lose out on fuel economy. When i was tinkering with my filter and jetting i was getting ~8.5-10 l/100km.

...160km/h? Really? Im super surprised to read that. Ive got a stock standard (well its not anymore but I havent ridden it with the mods yet) 1989 3LN FZR250-R and I used to ride it in and out of the city every day doing 195km/h - 200km/h. It would take about a couple k's to get there but it would sit there quite nicely.

First thing Id do is completely disassemble and clean the carbs. Probably best to replace (if its filthy) the air-filter at this point too as you'll have the airbox off anyways. Then id check the EXUP is functioning and adjusted correctly. A lot of people neglect their EXUP cables/adjustments, etc. When I snapped a cable on the EXUP, it started running like a GSX250 haha. You wouldnt know anything was wrong if it was like that the whole time... thats my 10cents anyways. Congrats on the new ride

The other problem might be short-shifting. The OP said he was topping out in 5th gear - how many revs was he turning? These little screamers need to be pushed to redline for full top speed capabilities; shifting at 14k will find you in 6th gear well short of your bike's capabilites...

This one actually happend in the UK. They couldnt get the bike out easily so the hosed out all the blood and guts and used it for saftey promos. 3 people died, 2 in the car and the bike rider.

Something that just occurred to me about top speed differences.... gearing! Its quite common for people to put larger rear sprockets on to get a bit more acceleration. That would account for the 10-20km deficit in top-end speed. Or maybe my bikes got different gearing so i go slightly faster than is normal for FZRs?

Bob. Damn! Those are two VERY nasty accidents. Quite sobering.

i dont have a kmph speedo any more but the fastest i ever got the wee beastie was 121mph at20k in 6th.. very scary. the bike isnt heavy enough to do that kind of speed..
bla bla bla (insert scare stories about going too fast here) yes it was on a runway.
and it was mesured with a speed gun. but it did kill my sproket and stretch my chain..

i hit 170 kph pretty easy and she still accelerates away from this speed. didnt try to go any faster... slightly scarey... i rekon 190 kph top speed was where these machiens toped out?

also if your bike was imported from japan recently the bike may have been modified to meet jap laws power restriction etc.
