my bike is making a strange rattling noise like a nut is being slapped around the engine. it isnt all the time and it isnt in time with the engine (doesnt get faster as the revs get higher) it started about a week ago and has been getting more and more frequent. it happens when idling most of the time or today i noticed it was happening when i close the throttle to change gear so chopped it on off a few times and every time it when off it rattled again.

its really concerning me please help.
also can anyone reccomend a good mechanic in melbourne preferably north-west

Never heard of valves being noisy before. Unless you have a broken spring?? That's weird.

The EXUP can rattle like you described as the bushes wear, and tightening up the slack in the exup drive cables will quieten it down..

im almost certain its the valves (under the cover where the spark plugs sit between) where the noise is coming from. havent taken it off yet to have a look though because i cant get the sump drain bolt out last guy must have locktighted it or something, is there anywhere else i can drain the oil from?

Those sump plugs can be extra tight. Try a long ring spanner or a good socket with a long lever
You may need to get a proper power driver socket ( they only have six flats and don't burr the nut edges as much ) and use an impact driver.

    - You don't need to drain the oil to do the valve check though.

by the way i have a 2KR non exup.

    one other thing...
while looking for a oil drain because i cant get the normal one undone i saw a bolt just below the starter motor cover with about a 8mm allen key and round head so tried loosing it off about half way out it hit the starter cover so i put it back in but this moring it was leaking a bit of oil from that hole and i had a look and now the bold looks like a grub screw could someone please have a look on theirs and tell me if the head of the bolt has been sheered off or if it was a washer that was pressed on?

hmm i have a very similar problem here are my symptoms:
after starting the bike up and just leaving it at idle there is no noise just the engine purring, with a very small increase in revs barely enough to lift the needle a weird noise seems to start sorta like a rattling sound then with more revs it goes away and the bike runs sweet! the same problem? or could mine be the exup cables needing adjustment?

It could be the Exup. With the EXUP valve pulley cover off you can grab the pulley firmly and push to one side or the other and if the rattling stops, you have found the problem. Then the real solution is to put new bushes in the EXUP.

sounds very similar to my sounds but the noise will come back after about a miniute of giving it a rev however mine is non exup. id still check the exup first though in your case
