hi all.
i went for a big ride yesterday and half way home my bike started getting hot(needle width off red) and wouldn't cool down and just wasn't rite, anyway when got home and parked on concrete i discovered it was leaking. now its leaking from the water pump cover seal and also pushing water out the little hole in the waterpump casing. is this hole like a safety hole so water doesn't get on the bearing is it, and any ideas on why it is leaking.

Not too sure why it would come out your water pump casing, check your overflow is clear and intact.

It would have been hot because a) your coolant was low or b) your radiator needs attention, ie holes, pressure leaks, check fins are not bent, replace radiator cap.

When water gets hot it expands and turns to steam, this becomes pressure, which is usually dissipated out the overflow from the reservoir on the back right of your bike.

Could also be your thermostat, check your fan is working, i have found the fan kicks in when the needle is centred on the black screw on the thermostat guage.

hope that it of some help

yer it had lost 500ml of coolant so that why.lol. i just went down and pulled the water pump apart and the seal behind the impeller is stuffed and thus letting water past it and the water drains out the hole before it gets to the bearing, so now i no why the water was coming out the hole. next step is am i better off buying a new water pump or trying to replace seals and bearings in this one, if so does anyone know how to remove the spring loaded seal and can i get another one anywhere.

id say it would depend on your mechanical knowledge, myself i would go to a wreckers and get a good second hand water pump. Victorian motor cycle wreckers are usually pretty good with these beasts, hasnt been anything that i have needed that they have not had. I'd think that would be the easiest way around it all, just a straight swap, might cost you 100 bucks or something, but easier than trying to track down some new seals etc.

Let us know how you go!

That sucks, having a leak in your pump seals. Might be worth trying the Yamaha dealers to see if they can get a new one, or at least a price so the wreckers don't rip you off.

The part number is 11H-12438-00; it's used on FZs, YZFs, and the early R6s, so the local dealer should be able to get it. A quick Google search of on-line stores shows pricing from US$12 to Eur18.

I'd strongly recommend just plain overhauling it. You might want to replace the oil seal 93101-10090 while you're at it; you don't want to drain your oil out the weep hole!!

Does that total near enough to 300 or 181??

Seems expensive, but then again, i have never bought a water pump, lol

Well hope it all goes well for you

sorry guys, what i was meaning was i can buy the internals separately for those prices which totals bout $141 i think or i could have bought a water pump assembly for $181, plus I'd still have to buy a front cover o-ring as well. so i figure i'll save 50 bucks and rebuild my water pump.
