hey guys, i've just replaced my head gasket, and got it all back together and it won't start. it sounds like it is not getting fuel into the chamber, when i twist the throttle while cranking it the engine note doesn't change like it should. the fuel tank is 3/4 full, the pump is working, fuel comes out the drain bungs on each carbie so its gettint to the carbie bowl but thats it. the spark plugs are still dry but have spark and 0.8 mm gap.

can anyone help me please cause it is a bit frustrating as it was running before i pulled it apart.

First put a bit of fuel in each carb throat and see if you can get it to fire at all.

    hi dave.
i poured a bit of fuel in each one and it just went sorta pop pop but didn't sound like it was gunna start.
i pulled the cam cover off to double check my timing marks. the exhaust was bout half a tooth late and the intake was not quite lined up properly, it was a smidgen late too. i was sure this is how it was when i took it apart, but i moved the exhaust forward one tooth anyway, which resulted in it being bout the same as before but early this time and the intake lining up perfectly.
tried to start it but same as before.

whether i,ve missed something putting it together or what i'm not sure. it doesn't knock or make any bad noises tho so thats a good thing.lol.

Are you sure the plug leads are on the correct plugs? Can't think of much else.

yay i finally got it figured out at 11:30 last night lol. because my dad took it apart when i wasn't there like i told him not to, he marked the cams wrong so wen i put it back together i had them mixed up. i swaped them back how they should be after i noticed that it wasn't going suck-push-bang-blow, instead it was going opening the intake, then compressing, then exhaust, then compressing nothing and sparking lol. no wonder it wouldn't go. anyway it also clicked to me what the E on one cam means, i looked at the other cam and it had I stamped on it supprise supprise, Exhaust and Intake. once i swaped them the timing marks line up almost exactly. kicked it over and it started.

now my next issue, it was hunting a bit on idle and it was like the throttle was sticking on making it not go below 4000rpm , then flick the throttle a few times and it goes back to a low idle where i have the idle screw set. i went to go for a gently short ride and i got half way down the driveway in 1st and it wouldn't rev, pulled in clutch, same thing and i had to hold the throttle on half way to stop it stalling then it just stalled.
could this be a result of the circlip position on the jet needle as when i cleaned the carbies i moved it to 3rd ring as said on this forum. but thinking bout it now which way do u count the rings from, the pointy end or the other end that sits up in the diafram

OK that's great that you have it running. It never crossed my mind that you would mix the cams up. In fact it would run in the reverse direction if you could change the ignition timing to suit. Six gears in reverse <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D -->

A good starting point with the carbs would be to put the needles back to original position. And only once its running properly with the correct float levels, move one position at a time trying to see if its better or worse.

If my memory serves me right, lowering the needles by moving the circlip one slot up the needle should make it lean out. For the same air flow a thicker part of the needle is blocking the fuel hole, so you get less fuel.

Sorry can't be more help, I have not done much with FZR carbs as mine never gave any trouble.

thanks dave yer i thought the same as u, so last night i put it back to normal and at idle is races a bit and then back to normal, and when i rev it up and cut the throthle it dies, so i bought new plugs and now fiddling with the mixture screw
