i just got my first bike and its a 89 fizzer and im not sure if its the clutch or not but what happens is when im going along and i want to pick up speed i give it more gas but it revs real high but im not get all the power out of it it sounds like the clutch is sliping??? what do i do?
Sounds like the clutch is slipping. easiest thing I can suggest to look at first is change your oil, and look at the clutch adjustment + cable, ensure the clutch point is set and everything looks ok.
Good advice from Brad, check too that the clutch cable is free to move, not sticking, and that the clutch lever has a fraction of free play when released.. Worst case scenario is that the plates are done or the springs in the clutch basket have lost their tension and need replaced. However both these jobs are easily done at home..
thanks guys realy helpfull <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt="" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s --> my dad has freed the clutch cable and given it a bit of slack its beter than befor but still does it,and just put new oil in like a week and i bit ago so am going to open the clutch but was woundering were the sump plug its to drain the oil? lol
Has the clutch only been slipping since you changed the oil? if so this could be because you have put too much oil in or its a bad grade of oil. what oil is it? i use 15w-50. no clutch slip after that the sump plug is down near your exup cable (assuming you have a 3ln). so if your sitting on your bike it would be on your left hand side but your side fairing has to come off to get to it. to tell if you have to much oil, look in the little window on the other side of the sump, stand the bike up straight and the oil should come up about half way in the window
From memory I did not have to drain the oil to check the clutch basket and plates. The oil level sits below the clutch cover.
yeah thanks guys when i first cheeked it in that litle round window it showd half so i thought u had tp fill that up to the top so my bad now know wat was the reason of the slipige had a look at the plates and some are a bit worn so will try replace them asap when puting new oil in how much do i put in 2lts? i have castrol 15w-50 motorbike oil is this ok?
Drake just for you info recommended oil is 20w40 or in colder climates 10w30. I use 10w40 valvoline durablend in my SV which is as good as anything. On the FZR clutch the friction plates are 3mm thick and the wear limit is 2.8mm. The steel plates should be betweeen 1.83mm and 2.17mm.
2L for change and 2.2L with a new filter but use the window as a final guide. Run the engine for few minutes, stop and wait a few minutes then do the check.
