    hi all.
    just wondering, im heading over to japan soon, and i was thinking about importing an fzr over (maybe even one for parts) (impending loan... looming.... damnit).
    anyways, ive heard the bikes over there are more restricted due to emission standards, i was wondering if anyone could confirm this. also, how hard is it to "unrestrict" an fzr, if that is the case.
    I was also wondering if anyone here has imported a bike before? because im having trouble finding all the information i need, for instance ive been checking out transport companies, and all i can find are cargo ships which will only do mass stock transports.

    1. The JDM (Japan Delivered Model) is the same as the ADM (Australian Delivered Model) for all FZR250's. There are no restrictions in any of the Australian FZR's. The only restriction that has ever been placed on an FZR was the FZR1000's getting delivered to the UK & Europe. For a couple of years they had a little half moon shaped rubber insert in the carb boots to restrict air flow. Easy enough to remove with a sharp knife/scalpal.

    2. Best way (easiest) to get a bike into the country would be to contact one of the many car importers and ask them if there's a spare few feet in the back on one of their containers. Might cost you up to a couple of hundred dollars for the space and their time & effort.

    3. Importing a bike means it needs to comply with Australian Design Rules (ADR). There's quite a few things that need to be changed such as indicators, headlight bulbs, all fluids flushed, tyres changed... and i'm sure there's more i don't know about.

    - Do you have a contact in Japan?
    - Do you have a way of getting it from the sale location to the docks?
    - Do you have anywhere you can store it whilst it's waiting for shipping?
    - Why do you want to import a bike? (Fun? Profit? Project? If it's for fun i'd recommend getting something like an FZR400 or a 400SP if you can find one cheap. Profit might not be as easy to make as you think... after all, look at the prices the Sumoto bikes are going for. Project, again look for an FZR400SP)

    i do have a contact in japan.
    i also have a place to store it.
    (good having family overseas)
    i dunno, how ill get it to the docks yet though, might have to pay for a transporter. unless i ride it to the docks and catch a train back to uni. i dunno about my confidence levels riding in japanese traffic though.

    and why do i want to import? for a project, but mostly just for fun. :p
    it all depends on how much it costs. but if i can do it all for less than $3500. id be pretty stoked. otherwise i'd like to go scavanging around for an 250 engine with less k's on it to put back into my bike so its worth it when i finish doing all the work i want to do to it. do i need to jump through hoops to get parts over to australia?

    thing is, im going to lose money on my bike, and i know it. but i dont want to just go out there and spen $4500+ on a sweet ride. id rather piece together my own. which also gives me the chance to learn more about my bike (and automobiles in general) in the process. (which works well for the direction i want my degree to take me)

    as for the 400, i was looking into them but a few problems (for me) were
    1. i read somewhere that the exup was just dead weight on a 400 and im a big fan of the EXUP atm... maybe its just a novelty to me <!-- s:D --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!-- s:D --> and
    2. it steps up in size, and im pretty short, and not overly strong, so i dunno if id be comfortable on it. id definately like to sit on one at a dealership in japan and see how it feels though and there also seems to be alot more information available for 400's.

    anyways, its not a sure thing, but its definately something id like to try to do. between now and when i leave for japan, it just depends how much research i can do, and how much i can afford i think.

    The 400 is bitchin. I'd take one and throw a 600 motor in it... WOOOHOO!!!!! Seeeeyaaaaa

    Back to the topic..... sounds like way too much of a hassle.

    money and time (to research) is the issue.
    "my japanese contact" is relos, and im the australian citizen whose going over there for 12months <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->
    which is why i originally started looking into it.
    although, i think the 12month thing is only for vehicles made in the last 10 yrs... stilll reading up on it.
    im leaning towards just picking up parts atm though, cos i just dont have time to sort all these compliancing issues out.
    i just want something with low k's so i feel like its worth the money and effort im looking to put into it.
    well, thanx 4 ur help and advice guys.
    a bit more reading and phone calls and in the next few weeks ill try to decide if its worth it.

    Yes the FZR is gone. I thought I would leave it up since it was my connection to this site. The GS, didn’t get any pictures taken when it was finished. I’m not entirely sure why but most likely I was riding instead. As promised a while ago now I will get a pic of the SV once it stops raining and she gets a bath to wash off all the commuting scum.

    not to be nitpicky but I always thought JDM meant Japanese Domestic Market, as in a vehicle made for use in Japan.
