My bikes is running very rich, a tank lasts about 120KM. The needles were set to the richest setting, however moving them one notch down makes it run too lean so my choice comes down to either having it run extremely rich or extremely lean.

Now, here's where it gets tricky!

    Float levels are fine
    Needles are like new
    Emulsion tubes are like new
    Everything was cleaned, twice!
Nothing is blocked, everything works smoothly.
Idle Mixture Screws don't do much as the bike is either running extremely rich or extremely lean.

Any ideas? I've taken the carbs out 10 times, cleaned em' twice, ****** with everything possible.

Mate check the rest of your bike out, get ur carbies properly balanced and its not necessarily carby related, get it compression tested, check your clearances, check ur chain and sprockets, run some top engine cleaner through, check your filter, have u got a stock exhaust? check the operation of your fuel pump and the condition of ur fuel filter and inside of tank. Make sure ur choke isnt staying slightly on, check ur tyre pressure... oh and be sure to run around the bike with a naked flame to see if you can find any fuel leaks. Happy hunting

What makes you think the float height is right? Try adjusting them. Float height will have an effect on the mixture.

I would be putting my money on the needle and seats... try disconnect the fuelpump and see if you get any difference.

I woyld try changing the Pilot jets cause as you have said the idle mixture screws are useless coz its either rich or lean, change your pilot jets to 12.5 as per manual specs <!-- s:rofl: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt="" title="Rofl" /><!-- s:rofl: -->

I'm doing valve clearances now, just waiting on some shims.

I'll see how it goes from there but when I say the fuel idle mixture screws aren't doing anything I think it's because it's running either so rich or so lean that the difference would be extremely minimal, I mean they are made for fine tuning aren't they?

If tuning doesn't become any easier after valve clearances I'll leave it at notch 5 and lower float levels as they're all pretty high up (but even).
