    Hey all.
Just did some maintenence on the bike (chain, check water, oil etc) and noticed i have used about 1 litre of oil in the last 600 klms. whats up wiith that? i have blown NO smoke at all, what gives? i have a feeling my slide needles are running one groove too lean. could this contribute? my MC put in that shell advance semi synth. Has anyone else who uses that oil experienced this?

You will find using oil at that rate, although excessive, is not unheard of. Using a better quality, less volatile oil will greatly help, or even stop your burn. Dont use stop smoke sort of additives, though.

How many k's have you done?

Just about to roll over to 40000. The thing that is pissing me off though, I just had my valve clearances and valve seats done (and full work over of the carbs). so i dont think it is a case of blowing oil past the rings, as i have good compression. I have found no oil spots on my drive, and like i said, i blow no smoke at all! i might have to try some motul oil and see what happens. i have heard really good things anout that brand.

...actually I know of now 2 people who religiously used 1 litre of Motul per 1000 k's. One was a GSXR750 and ZX9R. Tried the gear I'm using now, and they say they are lucky to use 100ml in 6000 k's. Try Motul, or anything else, if it doesnt help give me a hoy.

If it is not leaking on your driveway, it is definantly getting past the rings. There is simply no-where else to go. Trouble is bikes rev so high, the higher the rev, the more oil used. When a 250 has done 40 000 typically they are pretty loose and will use far more oil.

so what you are saying is, my bike isn't going to spit the dummy on me coz it is using oil, and i should just keep topping it up when it needs it. i guess il keep trying different oils and see what goes on from there. my farter said there is a brand called ammsoil or somethin like that and they have some impressive stuff. or maybe ill just find where to buy piston rings made of "unobtainium" and stick 'em in.

you might just find your plugs will eventually start fouling, otherwise she's fine

might be that you underfilled it last time - the oil level in the sight-glass is pretty sensitive and if you didn't give it time to settle you may have thought you filled it up but actually didn't (you should run the engine for a bit after replacing the oil and check after it has settled). Needs about 10 mins to settle properly. 1l per 600km is pretty high consumption - given its only a 2l sump.

true, the oil freshens when you add more, but the burn is not as efficient, so the oil catches more contaminants like fuel and water, making it not last so long. Dont extend oil drain periods without proper oil testing
