Went to do the first oil change since ive had this bike. I couldnt get the bolt out from under the bike. Tried undoing the screw that goes thru the bolt and it started stripping the screw. Couldnt losen the bolt either. Can anyone give some advice to help me? Cheers Scott
mine was exactly the same the first time around. people sometimes just over do it. well what i like to do is get a nice long pipe and stick it at the end of the wrench handle, get someone to hold it in place while you push the pipe.. makes it a lot easier to undo any bolt. no need to do anything with the screw.
The screw is there to make it easier to unscrew and screw the bolt; it does NOT come out of the bolt, it's a formed part of the bolt. Easiest way is to do almost exactly as sm0t0 said, but i personally prefer just using a torque wrench so i can find out exactly how damn tight the last moron tightened it to. If your still struggling even with an extension bar or torque wrench, it might be worth taking it to a mechanic.
?!?!?! If you want to break something (ie: bolt, wrench, hand, face, cat....) Ok the last one's fine....
Only use the correct size ring spanner or socket (metric) on the outer bolt as Koma says. You should be able to remove it with those. If you apply enough force to break the head off the plug, it was never going to come out anyway. All is not lost, as the major binding force was the aluminium or copper washer and the remains may be lose enough to screw out if you can get a hold of it. (Only if it breaks and you can't get it out) then drill a small hole in the remaining plug thread using a left hand drill bit (they should be available at an engineering supplier). Drill running anti clockwise (to suit drill bit) so that if the bit grabs and plug turns, it screws out instead of into the sump. Use an EZI-OUT to remove the remaining plug if it did not come out when drilling. Hope that helps...
Breaker bar or pipe on socket wrench. If you have the breaker bar you only need to hit it with your palm to get enough force.
using the soft face hammer on the end of the wrench shocks the drain screw and loosen up the binding. as long as the wrench (box end) is lined up right, it'll not strip the bolt. Just like using an impact gun on tight bolts/nuts
