Hey guys. Just got home with my new fzr250 (its an '89 2kr). I noticed the rear brake light works when i dont have the headlights turned on but no brake lights and no tail lights when i have the headlights on. am getting a major service done on it soon (last owner was a bit slack) and they should be able to fix it, but i would rather do it myself if possible. any ideas?

Get a multimeter and start checking voltages.

from what you say you have an earth (negative) problem or possibly a bad connection.

start checking all the connections around the front, behind the speedo etc
disconnect then check and clean. it should fix the problem.

Classic case of bad earth connection. That could be a simple as the globe metal body or the globe holder slighly corroded.

you can turn on and off your yeadlights ?

isn't it a law to have them on at all times when operating a motorcycle therefore the option to turn them off is not provided?

daytime running lights are mandatory only in some countries. For example: Canada mandates DRL, while US and Japan doesn't. Since these are Japanese bike that are imported, the lights don't turn on by default.

thats right. plus hard wiring of head lights was introduced after 89 if my memory serves. anyway.......... i had a harder look at the globe in question, and it turns out the 2 filaments in there both broke and fused together. should have looked harder to begin with, but i was not expecting the filaments to have fused. time consuming problem just became easy problem.

The US required the Headlights be on while the bike is running since I think 1978.

as lights are required to be on whilst the bike is running (in Oz) most importers wire this up so it can not be switched off while the bike is on thus my query.

well that didnt happen to my bike. i can have lights off if i please ( although a little stupid ). it has been handy lately though, as my bike has been seriously flooding and when i need more boot in the starter motor, i can turn the lights off. hopefuilly after my mechanic has done his work i wont need to do that, but it is still handy.
