Hiyah...Well baby is fianally on the road and going like a bat outta hell...I'm blown away at the speed it can get to without even sweating...170km so far. Anyway...I know...or think I know, that its a 1991 or 1989 FZR250R 3LN-3; But whats with the control panel and headlight? All I see are twin headlight units so is my one a patched up bike or is the single headlamp and instrument cluster genuine... Someone may know....we reside in Melbourne...but "go the All Blacks" Cheers [/img]
That's a 3LN definitely, but whether its a 3LN-3 or a 3LN-1 i can't tell from that picture. The instrument cluster may be genuine but the surrounds and the headlight are definitely NOT genuine. Looks like you've got a bit of work to do on it, a few missing panels on the tail. Might want to look into seeing what other duck tails will fit on there.
it's a 3ln-3 because the calipers are painted silver and the front brake fluid reservoir is round and plastic
Calipers on all of the 3LN-1's i've worked with have been silver aswell. Front brake reservoir style on a bike that looks like its had the front end overhauled wouldn't mean much to me, but that is true. There ya go, concensus (of 2) states that it once was a 3LN-3. PS. Those Yamaha logo frame plugs look pretty schmick!
What is the serial no. stamped on the neck??? We can work it out from that!! The number will start 3LN-
I concur, 91 3ln3. Same as mine. AFAIK the black paint with the silver V over the tank is unique to the model and year. It has however had a streetfighter conversion (indicators, top fairing & bracket, headlight, those cool frame plugs, maybe also something with the rear mudguard) and that isn’t a stock muffler either. I haven’t taken much notice but I don’t think that the colour of the calipers is a distinguishing feature. Raptor your bike has an aftermarket paintjob so chances are they painted the calipers and brake rotor at the same time. You might be onto something with the front brake reservoir though.
the paint job and decals are my handy work my mistake for assuming all 3ln-1 calipers are gold , though the paint does look original.....
Well it just goes to show how small the world can be sometimes…I actually found one of the original owners and the explanation (well sort of) as to why it looks the way it does. Oddly enough it’s deliberate rather than accidental. Below is the original post on this forum from “Roderzâ€
