2 weeks ago i rode my 89 fzr 250 1100kms in one hit, only stopping for fuel. the next morning i tried to start her up and only got the whinning of the starter motor. I drained the tank changed the plugs cleaned the carbies and still only a whining sound from the starter motor. hooked it up to my car to jump start it and still only the starter motor seems to go. fuel pump works and sparkys work. Anyone got any advise, other then taking it to a mechanic, or putting a match to it.

Sounds like the bendix isn't ingauging. Try giving the starter a light whack with a hammer. Otherwise, you're gonna need to start looking for a new starter.

the fzr250 does not have a bendix gear. Instead the startor motor is in contant mesh with a one way sprag type clutch( known as the Starter clutch) whick meshes with the crank, the starter will only drive the crank when the crank speed is less than the starter. The startor clutch is reletively easy to change requiring removal of one pipe and one cover to get acess. A universal puller tool is required to remove the clutch as it is friction fitted.

It is quite common to see this part fail.

finding a replacement part will likely prove difficult as most wreckers will prefer to sell complete motors. A new replacement anything for an fzr is hard enough to find as it is, and im sure you allready know the deal.

let us know how you go...

It looks like its gonna be more trouble then i can fix. I was thinking it could be compression now in the engine, probaly ring or sumthin if i spray WD40 inside sumwhere would that seal it up to get it goin?

Try push starting it and see if you can get it going. That should indicate if it's the starter motor or not.

Just put it in neutral, start pushing, flick it up into 2nd when you have some speed going, and let out the clutch.

    Im ready to burn it

I tried to push start it this moring and the bike wouldnt even try to kick over, it was a long push back up the hill. Its giving me the shits its been really nice on the goldcoast and i just wanna go for a ride. Im thinking compression, if i use WD40 ( CRC) to seal the rings where would i spray it into?? I dont know much past the carbi, so yer.

Please, for the love of god don't spray wd down the bores!

If you think its compression- test it properly. There is a guage you can hire (probably cost like $20) which screws into the spark plug socket so you can test compression. Once you have the reading for each cylinder, pour a tiny bit of oil in the bore and check again, if its different it is the rings.

It seems strange however that you have just taken her for a real good ride and compression would now be down.

from your initial description it doesn't sound like a compression problem, you would have had warning signs prior to it happening. I wouldn't go doing anything other than taking it to sombody who has expereince with motorcycles. wd is not recomended for carburettor cleaning as is can deteriate the allready fatigued diaphrams.
