Hiyah..Bought a FZR250 on ebay last week and finally got it running...Sweet! Runs okay as I took it up and down the road for a quick shakedown ride and nothing fell off. Fuel pump is shot (self inflicted DIY repair - but replacement on the way) other than that it runs okay

BUT...The engine rattles. Gut feel is pointing me in the direction of the timing chain. yet I'm no expert on bike engines this size and of timing chains, although it sounds like something is loose etc.

How do I test or confirm that this is the problem? What else could it be?

    Cheers

um im no expert on rattly engines, but i guess depending on what you classify as a rattle, mine makes a bit of a rattle when the clutch is out, prob a bad bearing or something, but goes away when you pull the clutch lever in (in neutral), worth a try?

yeh doesnt rattle when riding, assuming u mean when riding, is it a constant rattle or does it rattle more in certain parts of the rev range?

Clutch rattle is normal and nothing to worry about. The rattle from the top of the engine is most likely the cam chain. Allot of fizzers suffer from the same rattle. You may want to get it looked at but it isn’t in need of urgent attention.

When idleing it rattles like buggery...BUT I have not stopped to listen if its the same when the clutch is pulled in, although if memory serves right I did have the clutch in and the bike in gear as I turned it around on the test drive and the noise was still there - just went outside and confirmed..... Clutch in or out (in neutral) makes no difference to the rattle.

    Hmmm

I cannot tell if the noise is there while riding as the bike makes way too much noise to hear it...

is it coming from the engine? mine rattled around the front somewhere, i recently toook it apart and resprayed the steel frame, and its stopped rattling, so mustav been something to do with the fairing or something, maybe ciaran is onto it, i guess u gotta find out if it rattles when riding

If the bike is in gear and the clutch lever is in and it still rattles it’s not the clutch. If it’s the cam chain the rattle will go away when the engine is placed under load, like when you are riding. If it is from the fairing it will probably just change frequency as the revs increase.

Try doing a search on cam chain rattle and see what comes up.

Has your bike got the EXUP valve. They can rattle badly when idling when the bushes are worn out. Take the cover off it and grab the bit where the cables attach to it. Wobble it around while the engine is running and observe if there is any change in the sound.

my fizzer had a rattle coming from the engine at low revs... and it turned out to be the cam chain tensioner not doing its job.. I took it out and cleaned it. put it all back together and now its sweet.. with no rattling
