is it normal when you thrash your bike a couple of gears that the temp goes past halfway and also when sitting on idle for a while? when you start riding the temp goes back to half has anyone else experienced this is this normal ????

it is definitely normal for the bike to get warm (perhaps even close to red) if just idling.

As for thrashing the gears... My fzr used to get hot when cruising at slow speeds. Once I got to some open road it cooled down, and usually sat about 50% of the heat gauge. If in stop and go traffic it was not unusual to see it almost reach the redline (at which point the fan would kick in)

Yeah that happened to me last night, sitting in traffic and the needle just touched the red then the fan came on and all was well.

not sure what you mean by external fan... However, it is possible to hook up the current fan to a switch which you can control. I don't see why you couldn't add a second fan - just not sure where you would put it.

I did this on my bike for about $5.00

edit: not a 2nd fan just a switch

You can take the radiator guard off the front and fix a fan there.

Runs hot. Hell on real hot days with the fan on the thing can almost crawl up to the red if it's been on a long trip. Hasn't been an issue to date.
