    Hey guys,

I am just having some problems with my battery going flat. The battery is only 2 months old and a few times it has gone flat and so I have had to charge it again.

Anyway I have taken a multimeter to it to see what voltage I was getting across the terminals.

    Voltage at idol = 11.9V
    Voltage at 4000 = 13V
    voltage at 8000 = 14V

The result that concerns me is the 11.9V at idol. Is this normal? This would mean that everytime I sit at a set of lights the battery is going to start going flat.

When I bought the bike one of the headlights was disconnected and I did reconnect it after buying a new battery for the bike (the headlights are standard 30W).

Any help would be fantastic. Thanks

That would be about normal for idling with the lights on, and the battery volts would be slowly dropping with time untill you rev it.

I always warm my bike up with the lights switched off for that reason.

Thanks for that Dave. Unfortunately I can't turn off my headlights. The switch has been removed and filled with some black plastic.

So has mine but some one has fitted a big toggle switch under the RH handlebar on the frame.

I had the exact same problem for a month. My issue was that i had 55W bulbs in both headlights, plus a car fuel pump, and a fan that would always run.

Your voltage readings are actually about right. 11.9V is a bit low, but the other readings seem good.

I would check if your fan stays on all the time or has thermo switch. Your heat indicator would stay in the lower quadrant if the fan remains on.

If it's none of this then your battery is wrong for the bike.

I've had the same problem a few months ago. Luckily I do have the light switch so before I turn the bike off, firsly I switch the lights off and then give it a few second rev and she starts every time. Another thing that you might want to check is, what's your's battery Ah level. From what i can remember (it has been posted here before) it should be 10Ah or even 12, my battery has only 9 and that also caused a few issues. Even though the battery is new it does not have enough strength to crank the starter.

Ohh 11.9V seemed weird to me too....but it is normal.
