Just did a bit of pruning on this thread...
Hopefully now we can keep it a little more on topic.

Hey,

I have had experience with a bikes headers but cars headers i found no paint sticks, it always ends up dull or flaky after a while (Even VHT flameproof), however if u want that wet look and it to stay on for basically the life of the bike I would suggest getting them powder coated, its what all the show cars get done, as i said it does cost abit more then a can but the finish on it stays for years

i'm out of topic, but juz wanna ask a question, does the upper fairing of the 3LN (the one that holds the headlight . . . etc,) will on the 2KR? looks like it fits having 2 screws per side (screws that holds the upper cowling and the fairing.) anyone tried that??!? .

As was suggested... the VHT high temperature paint MAY survive, but if your after a finish that isnt likely to flake or peel after a few weeks or even months - powder coating is the way to go.

As for the cost, time to start calling around some of your mates if you have any in the fabricating field. A mate of mine knows a guy a couple of factories up with all the kit to powdercoat. A fellow FZR rider mate not on these forums got his wheels powdercoated gold by them for ~$70 if i recall.

Just for info, the VHT paint is still intact and going strong. No signs of pealing but the colour has dulled a bit over time. Riding in the rain hasn’t helped.

It still looks 100% better than what it started out as. As long as the surface is prepped well and you take the time to 'bake' the paint on as per the instructions you won’t have peeling troubles.

You may also want to look into a ceramic coating. Bit more $ but I have heard good things. Also a couple extra hp to be had, due to the thermal properties.

why not just use a sand blaster? All that hand sanding is not fun, besides blasting the headers removes rust faster and cleaner then hand sanding with less damage to the metal. just my $0.02.

Maybe it was because I don’t have a compressor. That combined with a rainy weekend and a fridge full of beer. I do agree that sandblasting would be quicker. Handing over parts for someone else to work on while you fork out cash, for me, isn’t nearly as satisfying.

I have friends who have different bits and pieces of equipment and we share them out. Anyone who violates the unwritten borrow time rules or doesn't play by the rules gets excommunicated from the group. I hate paying for someone to do my work too, so I know where you are coming from. I just assumed gearheads worked together to get stuff done. My wife just doesn't understand why a bunch of guys would get together, bend wrenches for a few hours, then drink some brews while babbling over crazy ideas formed by beer and wrenching. I do notice most of us have a taste for beer. We finally get Hahn's ice here in Canada, thats some good stuff, but rings in at 32 bucks CDN a case

That’s ~$34AUD for a case of beer, isn’t that bad at all. I pay about 38 for a case of Carlton Draught. Plus don’t you fellas get money back from the bottles?
