Hey guys, New to this forum, i'm about to buy a 1989 FZR250 for $2000, with new tyres; only 33ks. Very excited, seeing as i just got my liscence through Q-Ride. It's coming from my mate's dad who is a wholesaler and bike enthusiast. I did forget to check and ask if it was a 2kr or 3ln model. Can anyone tell from the poor quality pic? I've also pasted a slightly larger version here: http://www.geocities.com/damien_byzknight/fzr250.html Anything i need to look out for in particular with this bike (maintainance etc..)? Greatly appreciate your responses guys. Damien.
I cannot tell, but I'll ask you this.... Single front DISC brake or dual? Single front "Light Providing Device" or two? (sorry for the silly wording...)
Tim, Definitely two lights. Not sure about the disc brakes, assuming single front. Assuming both of these, is it still a good deal? Thanks Damien.
Thanks. I thought that may be the case. I've been told that it's an awesome price for the bike - very cheap. Does anyone know if that's true? There is some scratching, but it is 15 yrs old. Would appreciate a more expert judgment than mine. Regards, Damien.
If it is running well then that is a good price. If you were to buy one with sub 20 000 k's in good condition you would probably be looking at 4000+ (at least) from a dealer. I bought my fzr250 in 2001 for $2000 with 22 000 k's on it - it had been down the road once and had some minor mechanical issues with it.
Thanks Boz. My mate's dad, who i'm getting the bike of said that you shouldn't even look at the Ks on FZR250 because they are imported, and 9 times out of 10 they are whizzed. He's in the game, so i have no reason to not believe him. It's a little bit scary knowing that, but it does make the resell a little easier????
He's right - importers are notorious (no evidence - lots of rumour though) for putting the clocks back. Best advice for imports is to see if it runs nicely, and ensure everything seems in good condition (and if you are not in a position to tell then get someone who is). But as it is your dad's mate then you can probably be quite confident. I bought mine through my father-in-laws friend as well and had that bike for 30 000 glorious k's.
one of the theorys with the clocks.. is that they are disconected in Japan buy their ownes... simply so they can keep them!! I was told that they pay more tax?? on cars and bikes if they have many Ks on them/are old...
looks like my old bike... bigger pic needed if the tank is black it's my old one
i have heard there's some funny japanese law about high mileage/old vehicles. i heard they have to be taken off the road when they hit a certain age/mileage but your more tax theory might be more plausable
mine is a 93 3ln-II with an indicater 39,5XXkms on it, i am the second owner in ireland tho it was only imported late last year, i doubt the mileage is correct but i have seen less mileage on older ones so it is possible
Liamo, I think you theory sounds about right. Ive also heard things about cars with high mileage pay a larger tax. That is why u see many new cars in Japan, they only like to keep them for like 3 years, so they can continue to pay lower taxes (and maybe even parking?) Anyone clarify this??
I'd love to see them enforcing the 'paying higher parking' thing! Inspector - "This is a 1996 Toyota Camry!" Owner - "No its not, its a 2003! Check the badges!!!" Inspector - "Those are 2003 badges on a 1996 Camry!" Owner - "2003!!!" Perhaps this is an alternate motive for ricing up cars with newer badges etc! On a more related note; i too have heard that when owners sell a vehicle they have to pay a tax in accordance with how many km's the vehicle has done - so when it comes time to sell the car they just wind the clock back 20-30,000 km's. Also, there seems to be some magical number like 100,000 km's... cos every single car i've ever seen imported from Japan has 70-80,000 km's on the clock. Not ONE has had over 100,000km's.
there's tons of used japanese cars coming into ireland, thats where most of the performance motors over here come from cause its usually young dudes buying them and cannot afford the €35+k for a new golf gti of ford focus rs so a ten yr old toyota starlet gt turbo @ around €7k is far more plausable, not to mention that the imorters are registering them as 1.3 standard starlets so the lads can insure them for neext to nothing!! @koma: i was only lookin on the net at imported starlets yesterday for sale in ireland, and the highest mileage i saw on one was ... 99000km. sounds like the 100k might be the magic ticket to the big japanese scrap yard in the sky ... or to the next boat for ireland where it is sold for 4 times its japanese value!!!
