recently when i was out on bit of a ride i accelerated quite hard and the oil light on. so obviously this means its burnt some oil and needs topping up. the problem is what level should the oil be at on the little window. my bike is an '89 3LN model

If its like the 2kr...the oil lever should be around halfway up the window when the bike is straight.

If you burning oil try using some pentrite 15w-60. Thicker oil...reduced my burning by like 80%

may sound like a dumb question, but where's the viewing window? I've got a 92 3LN3...I don't think it has one.

It will. It will be on the right hand side close to where your toes would be when your foot is sitting on the peg. You may need to take a rag and wipe away the grease to actually see the window. And when you check the oil you will need to make sure the bike is upright (and not on sidestand), let it sit like that for about 10 seconds then take your 'reading'.

Since my last oil change the oil light pops on at least once a day, if i'm riding all day it'll happen at least 5 times.. I ahve LOTS of oil, even when it was full... any ideas why?

The oil level must be 3/4 of the window.

If there are traces of oil dripping or sweating..it only means that you overfilled the engine. Theres no room for oil expansion. so the hot oil goes through small gaps.

Its kinda tricky filling up engine oil so sometimes we overfill it.

The fzr250 oil sensor is a bit touchy. If you park on an uphill slope (about 20 degrees) for a little bit of time (perhaps even as little as 1 minute the oil light will come on when you accelerate. Why? I can only assume that this is causing the oil to pool in the rear of the engine away from the sensor... So that could be the reason for the light...

the other night i was at a red on a steep hill and my oil light came on cos the bike was on a slant and the oil was moving towards the back of the engine.

when yours came on where you on flat road? or were you travelling uphill?

im not so sure bout the bike but i know that generally car oil light would come on thru the oil pressure sensor, not oil level.
this i assume would b the same for bikes since they lean so a oil level snesor would turn on once ur in a corner etc.
i think u can isolate ur prob down to a few points-
    - does it use oil? could b a leak or worn rings
    - does it get oil pressure? if not then oil pump mite b stuffed/ or pick up mite b in the wrong place etc...
    - wiring from oil pressure swtich to light is fine? could b worn wire shorting against something else?
    - oil pressure switch not working?

anyway...gl findin out wat it is...

    dave

edit: k was looking thru the fzr400 manual n says its got a oil level switch... <!-- s:oops: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_redface.gif" alt="" title="Embarassed" /><!-- s:oops: --> guess doesnt hurt to check the above nayway...

You are correct Dave, it is a oil level switch, not a pressure switch.
