I don't beleive that this should happen. It sounds like either your Altenator or regulator is on its way out, or already is.

Use a multi-meter and check voltage with the bike off, on (idle), and at say... 6k rpm. Now I don't have exact numbers, but you should see around 12-12.5 volts in the off position and 12.5-13.5 at the 6k mark. Check it while starting to determine load of the starter and it too may be sucking power.

Isolate instrument lights first from ur check list.
Hard starting? try to see the headlight..Any noticeable change regarding its light or too dim? if yes then borrow a friend's motorcycle battery or charge your battery and take a look again at your instrument lights and headlight. If that solves ur problem..then u got weak battery.

If u still got problems with headlight and instrument light or hard starting after 10 min run. then suspect your charging system.

If no problem with headlight and battery or starting..then take a look whats goin inside the instrument panel..check the bulbs and the socket holding the bulbs..the contacts maybe corroded.

Mine look dim too.but not all..only the speedometer. Im pretty sure its all abt the bulb.

Try to do to the cheapest and easiest trobleshooting first.

sorry for not explaning myself properly. What i ment to say was the lights in the instrument display didnt light the area past about 60 like their is a bulb blown or somthing. all the electrics are tip top exept the speedo. ie. i get on my bike at night, start it up and turn the lights on but no backlighting on the speedo past about 60 (all the time not moving).

what do i need to do to fix it?

Ah - let me see if I understand... you turn on the bike and only half (not even) of the speedo is lit up, whereas all the other instrument (tacho, oil) are lit up fully.

I would be thinking it is a bulb within the speedo that blew. I wasn't able to see my tachometer for a while for the same reason. But then I sold the bike and it was all fixed. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

Replace the bulbs that have burnt out. You'll need to take the clocks off the bike and dissemble from the back. I cannot verify that this is the part that you need, but the instrument cluster bulbs are:

    BULB (12V-1.7W, T6.5) for a 94 FZR 1000
    BULB (12V-3.4W, T-10) for a 88 FZR 1000 also 90 FZR 400
    BULB (12V-1.7W, T10) for a 88 FZR 1000 also 90 FZR 400

Don't know which one you need, but at least it is a starting point.
