I thought I would post a solution to a problem I had on my 1990 FZR 250.

I was riding down the road when it started losing power, I downgeared but nothing worked. It stalled on the side of the road. I managed to get it started but five mins later it did the same thing.

That afternoon I rode home no worries, but the next day I had a similar experience. This happened over a period of a week.

I thought I may have a blockage in the main fuel line because reserve worked 24/7 no worries! But once I flushed the tank and checked the tap / fuel lines I noticed that everything was fine. So why is it that when on the main, the bike stalls?

As a last resort we came to the conculsion that it MUST be the air valve. There was not enough air being sucked into the fuel tank to replace the spent fuel, which created a vacume and prevented fuel from flowing freely. We took apart the tank lid, and saw the little orange / white valve. Blew on everything, cleaned it and hey presto no problems!

Such a frightening problem with such a simple solution. There you go ;-)

hey well done man and welcome to the forum! Since i've been here we've had that many stalling problems (including mine) that i reckon we should post a general stall check list Things like exup valve, clogged carbies, dirty air filter, incorrect valve clearances, spark plugs - if we can make up some kind of systematic check list to isolate the problem it could save people a fair bit of cash - anyone with more clues than me care to respond??!

i seem to have that problem too. sometime after riding my bike really hard or if ive got someone on the back it tends to stall on take off and its quite hard to get the bike started which is funny cos it starts first time everytime when cold. i thought after getting my bike serviced it would fix it but after a long ride to menai and back, i found it was hard to start after killing the engine for a few minutes.
