How does the main and reserve fuel tank work in the fzr?

I fill it up with 12 L in the main tank and 2 L in the reserve so a total of 14L. (approx)

I only put petrol in 1 hole so I assume that there is an overflow or something that joins the two fuel supplies

    Code:
     _________________| cap |_______________________
     | |
     | | |
     | | |
     -------------------------------------------------
                || main line || reserve Line

this means that i can use up the reserve tank 1st and then use up the main tank, or the other way around.

    OR
    Code:
     _________________| cap |_______________________
     | |
     | |
     | |
     ------------------------------
                || main line        |----------------|
                                       || reserve Line

so that if i have it on reserve once all the fuel is gone then thats it

    Hope that makes sense

    Cheers

    Deane

U have to consume the main before u consume the reserve. theres no separate container for main and reserve. u have only one tank. what separates the main from reserve is plain principle

    | |
    | |
    | tank |
    | |
    | _____________________________ | fuel level
    | | | |
    | | | |
    | | | | | |
    |-------------- |-|--- |-|------------------|
    main tube reserve tube
    | | | |
    to fuel cock (selector)

the main tube inside the tank is longer than the reserve tube. if you choose reserve on your fuel cock. the main line will be shut off

    | |
    | |
    | tank |
    | |
    | |
    | | | |
    |------------- | |------------fuel level |
    | | | | | |
    |-------------- |-|--- |-|------------------|
    main tube reserve tube

since the fuel level is lower than the main tube level, the only outlet for the fuel is the reserve tube. The reserve tube is not actually a tube, it is flush ti the lower inner of the tank

    | |
    | |
    | tank |
    | |
    | _____________________________ | fuel level
    | | | | the difference in height is
    | | | | approx 2 liters
    | | | |
    |-------------- |-|--- |-|------------------|
    main tube reserve tube
    | | | |
    to fuel cock (selector)

if u select reserve on you fuel cock, it will consume all of your fuel.

Sori, iddnt know that will be the outcome of the figure.

just take a look inside your tank. one tube is higher than the other, thats for the main line. and the hole beside it is the reserve line. the difference in height is your resrve fuel. if u shut off your main and select resrve..you will consume all the quantity of fuel in the tank. if you select main, u wont consume the fuel that has a level lower than the main tube.[/img]

riding down the highway the other day I felt the bike losing power, changed down gears no good, switched to reserve no good. pulled onto the emergency lane just as the bike stalled. tried my best to start it and then looked in the tank and it was dry! hehehe

I pushed the bike about 1.5k's to the petrol station (arms about to fall off) and went back home to see what the problem was. had a look in the tank again with a torch and could see a small plastic tube for the reserve sitting on its side at the bottom of the tank <!-- s:lol: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_lol.gif" alt="" title="Laughing" /><!-- s:lol: --> tried to get to it with chopsticks but it is too deep lol

I can’t be arsed fixing it just yet but hope it won’t be too hard, does it just slip back on the end of the pipe?

Might be easier to attack the problem form the bottom of the tank.

I suppose that lil plastic ur talking abt is just nothing or kind of garbage managed to get inside ur tank. Clogging your reserve passage

If that is the case then theres a 2 solution i can give:
    1. charge it with petrol full tank. A plastic should float. Use spoon to get it.
    2. Or you can drain your fuel tank. Complete drain. Then suck it with a vacuum cleaner.

Please try to clean your tank while it is drained. Use a wire and make a ball of scotch brite at the end. Scrub it inside the tank with running water. Like cleaning a toilet bowl. Den make sure its completely dry. So next time u got problems with fuels..u can cross out the tank from the suspected list.

No i am certain it is the reserve riser tube that is on the bottom. I can see the two fuel outlet holes on the bottom of the tank and they look the same, but one is supposed to have a tube on it just like the one in the tank. I will drain the tank on the weekend and get it out but just wanted to know if i can just slip it on the end of the reserve line without having to find a new one.

Don't see why you couldn't. It may be ther the opening has just gotten enlarged and won't stay on. Then you'll start needng to source one, or find some other alternative way of keeping it attached.

    all fixed.

it seems that the last owner had tried to fix it themselves and managed to strip the heads on the screws on the btm of the tank. so i went down and got a long claw kind of thing from repco and used it to get the two pipes out. one was the main filter and the other one the reserve tube with a filter on top.

main went in first go with the claw but the res. was a bit more tricky. ended up putting a zip tie and putting it around the stem to get a better grip with the claw, put it gently on the hole and used a flat head screwdriver on the zip tie to push it in (harder than it sounds lol).

    i wonder what else i am going to find that the last owner didn’t tell me <!-- s:sniper: --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_snipersmilie.gif" alt=":sniper:" title="Sniper" /><!-- s:sniper: -->

    cheers for all the help.
