I'd like to check the valve clearances on my FZR250RR 3LN, firstly, anyone know what they should be?

Secondly, I've only just got the bike, so need to change the oil, I've got some semi synthetic stuff (Putoline Sport4, 10W/40), would this be ok for such a high reving little engine? Should I bung it in my CG125 and get some synthetic stuff?

Thirdly, I got a new chain and sprockets. The chain is a cheep 20GBP non O-ring one, should I take it back and fit a proper O-ring one that's 3x the price?

Bearing in mind, I'm in the UK, for what dfference that makes.

Read the lables on the oil to make sure that it doesn't have friction inhibitors, (ie: safe for clutches). I can't help you on the valve adjustment, but I do recommend taking the non-O-ring chain back and getting a quality O or X ring chain.

I would recommend that you use a fully synthetic motor oil. Shell Ultra 10W-40 comes recommended (its worth the extra cost). As for the chain, I would recommend that you use a good quality O-Ring Chain (RK-Takasago or the like).

    Cheers

Thanks for the replies, you're right about the O ring chain, I've got a non O ring chain on my CG125, and that's got an enclosed chain case that helps keep the dirt off. It's lasted 15,000km so far and is still in good condition. Given that the FZR has no enclosed chain, it's going to get blasted with dirt.

The oil, I've checked out, and it's got the MA mark on the back, which means that it won't make the clutch slip. How often does the 250 need its oil changed anyway? I may just put the semi-synthetic in for a shorter period, say, half the time.

I wold go for a good quality oil such as Motul 15w 50 or Silkoleen same wieght...

Your Valve spacings shold be Inlet .10 to .15 and exhaust .15 to .20

and buy the best chain you can.. because if you look after it then it will last a lot longer than a cheap one that you replace 3 times before your good ones dead.. so you end up paying the same price anyway with out the headache

    regards

Excellent, thanks for the valve adjust info there. One point about the weight of oil, it's winter here in the UK and I feel that 10W/40 is better suited to the chilly weather at the moment.

I may go back to the shop where I got the chain and get the O ring one on second thoughts. I don't like fiddling with the chain outside in the rain and the wind, and the O ring will pay for its self in that aspect alone. <!-- s:) --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!-- s:) -->

Any thoughts on the oil change interval?

I always did oil changes every 5000 k's (and oil filters every 10 000). Even though it is only a 250 it also only has 2 litres of oil at a time, so it is all relative. However if you are using a fully synthetic they do last longer (and cost more to warrant this) so extending my tuning period could be ok.

Yep the coolant reservoir is where you put the coolant - little clear plastic container under the pillion seat with a snap off lid
