Mate, definately not. When i'm riding im off duty, which means i'm not a cop. Even when i am on duty, i've only ever pulled over a motorbike once, and that was because i watched HER do a 200m wheelie up the road when she took off from the lights. I had a chat to her, she was so nice i let her off with a warning. It was midnight and there was no traffic on the road, the only person she was going to kill was herself. by the way, where do you guys go for rides around, sydney, i'm originally from newcastle, so i have no idea where i'm going when it comes to sydney, apart from where i work.
Greeny, I was wondering if you could clear some information up for me...Firstly I was wondering..is it legal to ride up the middle of the lanes when ur stopped at red lights? Ive heard yes and ive heard no. Also, whats the deal with lights...being a motorcycle..and u want it as visible to other traffic as possible. Is it legal to put say some sorta blue light on the bike? Thanks, much appreciated <!-- s --><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="" title="Smile" /><!-- s -->
Grendal - road laws are slightly different in NSW vs. Vic. Lanesplitting is not specifically mentioned in the road laws, but it has been stated to be legal by a VicRoads researcher (who even said it makes riders safer by getting them to the front of traffic and visible). The rules - must 'lanesplit' to the right of the cars, while staying to the left of the white line. The two road laws that make this legal in vic is that you are allowed to pass on the right of congested / slow / stopped. You are not allowed to pass someone on the left while in their lane unless they are turning right - this is why you must stay to the left of the white line. So while it is not illegal, it is still frowned upon by police if you do it an innapropriate times. Police can still charge for a myriad of other offences that are more subjective (i.e. dangerous driving - I have heard this being done when lanesplitting moving traffic). This issue has been discussed extensively at netriders, aus.motorcycles, and also on the MRAA forums, and that is where I get my info from. Having said all that Greeny may have the police perspective on this matter...
Like boz said, the VIC road laws would be different to NSW, but i am guessing they would have similarities. Firstly, as far as i am aware, there is no specific offence for going through the middle of cars stopped at the lights. When i first got my bike i asked a mate from the highway patrol about it and this is what he told me.. While there is no specific offence for it, there are still a variety of charges / tickets we can give you. The main one and most appropriate would be negligent driving/riding, as the definition of "negligent" is doing/not doing something a reasonable and prudent person wouldn't/would do. Hence it fulfils the requirements of neg drive. While the chances of getting a ticket for this are slim if you are doing it safely, eg at stopped traffic at lights, and you are more likely to be spoken to (providing you pass the 'attitude test') there are still police out there who are deadset nazis, and dont give a sh*t who they give a ticket to, or what for. The main things to remember is never ride through the traffic when it is moving (common sense should tell you this anyway) and dont use the breakdown/bicycle lanes to go past traffic, as there are specific offences for these. secondly, i dont know about VIC, but in NSW you CANNOT display a blue light on your vehicle unless you have permission from the RTA, eg. Police. This is an offence. long winded, but i hope it helps. Greeny.
Yep, thanks a lot mate. I heard NSW recently got a law stating motorcycles aren't allowed to split lanes... Ive heard a variety of comments about lights. Mainly that red lights are illegal because they r used for emergency purposes...and that blue lights aren't. But I think im prob best going down to local police station and finding out lol.
