I gave the chain a clean and lube the other day but I think I went overboard with the lube. When I returned from a ride so the chain was warm I gave it a good clean and lubed it on both edges. But after the next ride the rear wheel was splatted with lube and crap. I think as I don't have a center stand I may have gone over part of the chain more than once while I was working out the best way to move the chain around. I was wondering how much lube should you use. I don't think I can afford to lose much more blood cleaning the wheel again ( at least not for a while ) Thanks Phil
i just spray and give the wheel Two turns so u get both side. I find u will always get excess lube all over the place. Try to use enough to coat it but dont build it up to thick.
when i lube up my chain i let it soak in for a while then i wipe all the excess off with a rag. i found this today after doing some research, i dont know if i would ever do it to my chain. http://www.members.cox.net/watt-man/WD40experiment.pdf
I always clean and lube my chain when it it hot/warm after a ride. My method. I come in from a ride, pop it on a race stand then wipe the chain with a hero soaked rag or proprietary chain cleaner. Then I get some cardboard (beer cartons work well, but that is my excuse) and put it between the chain and the tyre and bend it under the chain to protect the floor. I then rotate the wheel and lube the chain from the inside only, whilst the chain is still warm so it soaks in. Lubing from the inside means the lube will throw out when you next ride. Haven't tried it yet, but have read about a DuPont chain lube that first blows crap off the chain, then the lube "sets" on the chain.
