Hey there guys. Bikes running great, but I'm getting quite an audible sort of whirr under load. Loud enough to be heard over the engine and the music in my ears even. Is this the notorious cam chain issue? Was thinking of taking apart the tensioner and having a geez. Can't tell from the manual where it's located? While on the subject, how accurate do the torque specs have to be on it? I've been using a cheapo kinchrome one but I suspect it's off since is snapped 2 bolts I the bloody stator cover. Still haven't bothered drilling it out coz it's not leaking. Is it worth buying one of those deflecting beam wrenches? Cheers
http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?threads/shauns-zxr250-a-model-build-thread.1310/ Theres stuff there about the tensioner and if u search cam chain I think theres other tales of woe about The CCT is used to check the condition of the chain ....if the tensioner can no longer extend enough to tension then the chain is kaput. Torque settings are designed for a bike off the assembly line ... we are talking wear and tear and fatigue on 20+ yr old bikes and components ...... alloy casings and the like u need to be careful with Some torque specs list everything ...every nut and screw ....... the only time I use recommended tension is on critical parts like axle nuts , swingarm nuts , brake rotors, sub frame bolts kind of thing. If an engine cover comes loose u arnt going to die.... if your brake rotor falls off or comes loose even ,well then ...
Zxr's do make cam chain noise, that's what they do lol. The tensioner is an auto adjusting one used on all sorts of kawasaki's, that does keep it looser then a manual tensioner. I think kawasaki engineers decided to cut down on the chance of the chain snapping from over tension........
Zxr's are great bikes, one area that was considered by many not so good, you guessed it......Cam chain tensioner! Wise call to seek a new one.
Russky Even though u didnt go as far as having the forum name tattooed on your forehead ...u came pretty close with the stickers ... for this you have earnt Premium membership and therefore access to the ZXR documentation ...... including part numbers! http://2fiftycc.com/index.php?resources/categories/zxr250.25/
The thing that has me stumped is that the whiirring noise is all through the rev range and under acceleration as well . Wouldnt it be more noticeable at idle or on decel, when the chain has slack in it? Having said that, the noise is definitely coming from the top right of the engine block
i think this noise comes from a loose chain, mine made a whirring noise before i got a new tensioner. Just go buy a new one they are only 70 bucks new.

Sorry grey, after the tensioner at this stage. If it don't fix it, then I'll consider the chain itself
When mine had camchain rattle it was proportional to the revs, tensioner will fix it as long as your chain is within spec good luck
i got mine from a local bike store that sells kawasaki parts, its the same as a gpx250 i think. either a gpx or zzr.
I'm going to swap my tensioner with one i have on another engine to see if it makes a difference to the noise mine makes ill take videos for you if you like??
