Hi there we thought we would join up for some friendly chat and some advise along the way.. Having troubles with our 250vt honda spada.. It's lacking power at high revs around the 7000 mark and only at high revs has a loud rattle .. I do need to replace the air filter as it is really badly clogged up but has anybody else had this problem .. . . ? Cheers

Welcome Woodsa. The air filter could be restricting the intake at higher revs. Re the rattle, are you using premium petrol? Is the rattle only at higher revs or at all revs?

    :welcome: to the community

There could be something sinister going on in the engine but best to check the simple and cheap stuff first.

If the air filter is bad .... how are the rest of the maintenance items?

Oil changed, oil filter , fuel filter (if it has one) , spark plugs ?

Has the tank ever been cleaned out? ... is there rust inside?

    Carbys ever been cleaned out/rebuilt?

Also pull the plug leads and unscrew the caps off the leads ..... a good idea is to snip 2 or 3 mms off the lead so there is nice new wire for the cap to screw back into ..... when replacing make sure the cap screw goes into the centre and not off centre into the rubber of the lead .... check also for corrosion in the 'clip' inside the cap that goes onto the plug top.

    Hi Woodsa

Welcome to the forum. Honda VT250, great bike and really nice ride.
The information given to you by Murdo and Greyimport is spot on, my concern relates more to the rattle at high rpm's.

Once the oil has been drained and replaced with fresh oil, would like to know if the rattle persist, should it disappear you can put it down to poor maintenance by the previous owner. Lets cross that bridge when we come to it.

Dirty or blocked air cleaner can have a dramatic effect on the performance of your ride, again with the new air cleaner installed, let us know what transpires with the power delivery.

Keep us posted on your progress once you undertaken these tasks, we will have a better idea then.:thumb_ups:

A big end or crank bearing would make a knocking noise at idle.

started the bike and pulled the front spark plug lead off and the engine died reconnected it and started it again and then took the back spark plug lead off and the engine died. Checked that there is spark coming from both plugs and that fuel is getting both carbys also checked the timing and it is right ..the rattle starts at about 5000 revs and does not rattle at all on idle. not sure what to check next other than guessing that it is the bearing ..

hmmm, could it be a blocked main jet on one cylinder? on idel the pilot would be doing the work , but under revs the jet could blocked and starving the cylinder of fuel ?

any chance of posting a video to youtube ?
