2000km journey across the world's largest lake on old motorbikes... http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-04-15/darwin-adventurers-trek-in-siberia/6391872
My father is a hunter. When I was a child, we had this Ural. My father and I rode it hunting in winter at -25 Celsius. In those years, no one had snowmobiles or ATVs. And everyone went to the Urals. It is very passable. And if it gets stuck, it’s easy to push it out and you can move on. The plant where they are still made is located in the city of Irbit. This is approximately 150 km. from me.
Back in the mid sixties in upstate New York (that's in 'murica), the owner of a local shop would flood the field next to the shop and create a football field sized frozen pond. Every Sunday a group of us would bring our MX and scramblers out for a game of motorbike polo on the ice. This was before studding tires was a thing. It was a good time, until I hooked a crack in the ice while sliding sideways. The bike stopped, but I didn't, landing directly on the noggin. Fortunately I always wore a helmet, even back then. After a day at the hospital for "observation" for a minor skull fracture and concussion (and home from school for two weeks!) it was back out there for the rest of the winter. Great Fun!
At the age of 16, I went to a driving school to learn how to drive a motorcycle. It was winter. Air temperature -10,-20 degrees Celsius. On the edge of town, near a vacant lot, there were long rows of garages. Driving lessons were held there. The instructor rolled out a 125 cc Minsk motorcycle for us. And he went into the garage, drank tea, and not only tea))) The guys and I built a springboard out of snow and boards. And one by one they jumped off this springboard in Minsk. When it came time to take the police exam, almost no one passed the first time. The poor motorcycle constantly stalled, rattled all over and did not want to ride normally. In general, we broke it ourselves in two months of classes, and then because of this we were unable to properly follow the exam program. I passed only the third time, I arrived on my father’s working motorcycle)))
What a great story. Doing your test in -20 It is hard for us to wrap our heads around that. Most of the members here live in Aus and I live in Thailand.
There are people from different countries here. It is very interesting.
We are all brothers, and a few sisters, who love bikes, and this is a place where we can help each other and share stories. To hell with political sh*t.
