So I have a clear visor on my helmet and after riding for a few hours yesterday , my face/head felt like a baked potato ( probably looked like one too  )

Now the temps here have been 35+ so was it from just being out in the sun with a bucket on your head or from the sun coming thru the visor........?

Im going to get a tinted one but theres a few 'different' types ..... smoke, silver, mirror, blue, yellow etc

    visor colors.jpg

So what do u guys use?

Also are there any state laws about this ? ..... obviously u cant have a 'tinted' windscreen on a car.
The clear one I have has an Australian Standard stamped on it.

As usual buying in Oz is stupidly expensive ....

I've hear contradictory words about the rules in NSW. Some say you can't ride after day light with a visor with less than n% transparency (can't remember the value of "n", but it is the same as car windscreens). Others say you can ride with this type of visors any time of the day, period.

Regardless of what the rule says, make sure you get a visor that's easy to swap over, and you won't get annoyed doing it often. Riding with tinted visors during the night is the same as riding with sun glasses at night. You will see less.

I thought about having a clear one for the night, and a tinted one for the day. I gave up on the idea, and just bought myself a polarised sun glass and it fixed my problem. Got a large one, covers a lot more than just my eyes, so there is no glare coming from the sides.

By the way, for to mention something important. If you buy your visor from overseas, you will have problems with it. Only visors with the Australian Standards stickers are legal for road use.

My riding is purely for pleasure ... which means Im not bothered with rain gear or night vision ..... which of course I have the clear visor for if need be.
Wearing sunnys is ok driving but to me, just another bit of kit u have to piss about with when riding.
But I guess handy to have when stopped somewhere on a ride so to speak.
    ;)

The setup on my helmet to change visors is pretty simple .... u just need a coin to undo the screws

Had a feeling this would be the case.

These look ok , if not overpriced .....

All my helmets have clear visors, wear a pair of shades if the sun is bothering you and can be used when you get off the bike, makes good sense. If your getting hot under the collar push your visor up one click and you'll get plenty of fresh air.

The legal minimum amount of visible light transmission through a car windscreen is 75% and no tint is allowed (except for the top 10% or anywhere above where the wipers do not contact). Adding to what 'other people say', I've been told the only legal visors are ones with the AS sticker as they can be used during any time, any day, under any condition. Thus, a tinted visor will never have an AS sticker since they cannot.

Unless you're acting like hooligan or come across a cop who's having a bad day/power trip, you're unlikely to be hassled for using one during the day. I've seen plenty of coppers use blue iridium visors whilst on their bikes.

I use a tinted visor when I know I'm only going to be out during a sunny day. Otherwise, it's clear for the rest of the time. I've been caught out once and it sucks.

As for which visor to get, whichever tickles your fancy really. I'm a big fan on the gold iridium(mirror) finish, but it wasn't available at time of purchase, so I went with a silver one instead.

Question is ""HJC VISOR HJ02 IRRIDIUM GOLD Does this visor have an Australian Standards sticker or stamp on it? Thanx!.""

Answer is ""Hi, According to the supplier, the visors do not have Australian standards stickers on them. Thanks for your enquiry, SCM online team""

Just like many other items they sell, it's not for road use. Or "use it at your own risk" type of visor.

Well there it is in AS1609. "Must be clear and to Australian Standards".
Buy your self some cheap sunnies and a MX style peak to keep the sun off your face.

I bought a shark helemt with the integral visor - that way when the sun gives me the sh*ts I can flick it down then get rid of it when I don't need it. Chuck in the sunnies and it's pretty effective.

I have always been a visor open rider. I guess it comes from years of off road riding.
Clear visor in the open position with good quality sunglasses. I now use Wiley X's that have clear, dark and yellow lenses so if conditions change I just stop and change the lenses. If it buckets down the visor can be closed.

BTW: Yellow tint is magic in fog or overcast grey conditions.

If you are not in an organised and sanctioned race I doubt that there are any real issues other than if the visor is not compliant it might fail in which case the rider could be injured which is a risk they accept when they install the visor in the first place.
You would have to be giving a very clever cop some serious lip for them to check visor compliance and even then having a non compliant visor may not actually be an offense for a rider anyway. Compliance in this instance is a safety measure for manufacturers and resellers.
Think about it this way. What is potentially worse? Wearing a visor that has no compliance standard stamp or wearing an open face helmet with no visor and standard prescription spectacles with glass lenses? The second scenario is 100% legal.

I had a brand new dark visor on my helmet on Monday. It's rubbed down the road! Spewin. My mate has a new Bell helmet that has ,excuse the spelling, a photochromactic lens. It darkens in the sun and lightens in the dark. Way cool!
