I like to weigh my bikes down with tools and 'may need that' stuff. Because I do some long multi day rides and in places where there is not many people I like to be prepared as much as possible. I also service my bikes well at home before leaving and if riding with a group it is me that is always asked for a loan of a tool on the side of the road. I also ride with the number of the roadside assist in my pocket and a phone. I carry the original kits (where I have them) and have a tank bag with things like 12" shifter (modified for tyre removal), 8 to 19 open end/ring spanners, small 1/4" drive socket set, flat and JIS screwdrivers, large pliers and fence wire, Allen keys, small hammer, tyre repair/new tube and levers, first aid kit, folding knife, electric wire and joiners, duct tape, box of matches, clean rags, chain lube, 500ml engine oil, bottle of water, and some other things I cannot remember at the moment.

Box of matches ? is that when it wont start or when you are on the hill at Bathurst and want to play up to the crowd with a sacrifice to the bike gods ?
When I was there I stayed well back from 'the ring'. Maybe need to boil a billy for tea or fry some roadkill.
definitly / always .. have tool kit on the bike /bikes .. would feel naked without one , never the factory ones but a realistic compact kit for ea bike .. you never know what may rattle loose as a eg
