Hi Everyone, I was just looking for some guidance and tips on can chain tensioners for my bike (ZXR250C). I've heard the OEM tensioner wasn't great and been told to try a GPX400 automatic tensioner. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Cheers!
Hi Reece The oem CCT does work okay, alas the cam chain and tensioner are often overlooked when it comes to routine maintenance , the zxr tensioner is used in early gpx250’s and can be sourced locally from your dealer. There are specific measurements that can be done on the cam chain and specific parts of the cct , check the manual and replace as required. Having learnt the hard way though destroying several zxr engines , can I suggest you shift at 16,000 rpm as you have already hit peak torque . anything more is just stressing the engine. Kiff
Why would you have a 19k redline if you're not supposed to go there . Seems like a bit of piss poor design in my opinion. Should've gone gear drive like Honda or had a thicker chain. Chain is fairly small considering it looks the same as the 2 cylinder gpx (which also stretch easy) yet has twice the amount of valves
Same reason all the jap fours have peak power at about 16,000 and peak torque at 14,000 or so... why can they rev higher? Because they can, and it was a bit of a show off thing as well I would imagine. Would the rev heads in Japan buy a Kawasaki over a Honda if it had a lower redline?
The Kawasaki has a smaller hyvo chain compared to the Yamaha, only 3 plates compared to the 6 on others. Honda's are gear driven and I don't know about the Suzukis.
Didn't want to start a new thread, but is the CCT a manual one? So it should be adjusted periodically? Or is it maintenance free? And how does one adjust it? I looked in the service manual and it just says "Loosen the stopper screw, and then tighten it. With the bolt loose the spring takes up slack automatically." This makes me think that I should be loosening the screw every 1000km and retightening it.
It's automatic. The screw on the side is only for holding the tensioner while you install it on the engine. You undo the screw to release the tensioner and it tightens the chain automatically.
