Got to love using the Hulkster. I never understood what "all the way to your elbow" meant until I started using this thing.

Sold the mc19. Had mixed feeling, thought about keeping a CBR, but a dozen bikes are more than enough. Maybe...

I did a bit of filling some small dents on my tank and then gave it a light hit of Etch Primer.
Also started to polish the lip on my front wheel.
Didn’t get any pics but I will concentrate on polishing the lips of both wheels, tomorrow.

When you have a quick couple of maintenance jobs to do on your bike, but each time you remove a couple of pieces you think "while that's apart, I could do this, too" and before you know, you're stripping the bike!
    Before:
    IMG_20180923_062806.jpg
    After:
    IMG_20180923_062837.jpg
Checking valves clearances, replacing spark plugs, throttle syncing to come, I'm sure I'll find more jobs to do, too. But it did open a can of worms. When I pulled the air box apart, I discovered the air filter had disintegrated and the throttle bodies were blackened - bit of cleaning required but suspect there's some more maintenance to do while here. But when to stop?!

So this morning I searched high and low for my good old Rockwell $69 buff that has done dozens and dozens of cars... eventually found it in the last possible place it could be.. (always the way)
Fitted the mandrel and realised the buffing wheels I have are too small but gave it a go on the rear wheel.. just to see how it would go.
Maybe I am being too fussy.. but I am not happy with the finish I am getting.. maybe larger diameter wheels will cut a bit better but these rims seem to have a much harder surface than the last wheels I polished.
These were a set of BBS LM rims that I had on my Scirocco R. They were too big with the wrong offsets but I loved the look.

    FZR Rear partial polish

    UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1234.jpg

These are the BBS rims I polished.. they are a bit easier when you can remove the centres.. :)

    UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_7bb.jpg

Maybe it has something to do with the BBS being forged and the FZR are Cast.. or maybe I am just being too fussy...

Some alloys polish better than others. Different alloys machine, weld and cast to different quality, give different colours and so forth. Castable alloy typically not great for machining, so may not polish as nice - blame the lead!

They will polish up OK.. I agree with @my67xr on using the 6" items and I had looked earlier at those 2 pads.. so even though I have "finished" them I will grab those pads during the week and have another shot at them.. .
They came up OK though considering I am using 4" pads.
    I am just really fussy

These wheels certainly feel harder than the BBS forged rims I polished before. So I doubt that lead is the culprit.
The BBS ouster’s would marr just by looking at them.
Once polished they got several coats of a very hard glass coating that is a wheel application derived from the Car Detailing industry. I will use something similar on these wheels.

The other thing is the FZR rims are not actually polished as stock. They are fine machined which gives an almost polished look.
I couldn’t fit the rims into my blast cabinet and didn’t have Soda to blast them outside so there are very minute matching marks as well as the etching from the crap that was on there before.
Having said that, I think they will look pretty slick once I finish the polishing and paint them.

Why that would be way more work than using the buff with the correct buff wheels.
I have Purple metal polish for the final polish.

I have been accused (jokingly) that I could build a bike from a piece of rust, but I think these bits I saw in a salty backwater at the coast last weekend will be beyond me. :D MC-14 006.jpg MC-14 007.jpg

Make some molds with some plaster of paris. It works for palaeontologists.
