So... I am now the owner of a 1975 CB400F Air Cooled classic bike... One of the "Baby Honda Fours" and I think the best looking of the group... with that lovely 4 into 1 exhaust, low set bars and slab sided tank it is a really nice little project. While she is Red at the moment... she will end up being Varnish Blue or a nice Candy version of Varnish Blue. My inspiration is the Cover bike from Aril 2012 of Classic Bike. She is showing 29,000 odd miles on the clock which look to be about right... Interesting to find that she is pretty much all there as per original... other than the tool kit and original books. Original indicators, head light etc.. the seat has been recovered at some stage and they didnt put the rivets in the sides but the holes are in the seat base for them. Little thinks like the clip holding the Air Cleaner in are still there, as is the tool kit plastic panel and the cover. This makes the Restoration part much easier... As for it being a Resto/mod... well I want the bike to behave nicely so it will get Electronic Ignition (no more points to adjust). The Air cleaner will be replaced by a K&N unit but it will adapt to the original Air box... little things that make the bike a lot more enjoyable but are not for the "purist" but there will be NO cutting of the Frame... No Cafe gear on this bike... (maybe on another Honda 4 at some stage ) The gathering of parts has already begun... so far I have my Tank Decals, the front disc shield, OEM Parts manual and a Haynes Manual and a Battery is on order. I jury rigged the battery from the Across up today and kicked her over a few times..she fired and ran on the 3rd or 4th kick (Starter circuit is playing up... thank goodness for Kick starters) and she ran pretty rough... blew lots of smoke and then also blew about 4 wasp nests out the exhaust and revved up nicely... lol. That was all I wanted for today... It will now be a couple of weeks before I get into the CB much but as I do things or acquire parts I will document them on here.. The one thing I disappointed with is the lovely Factory exhaust... the outer pipe (Cylinder 4) is a bit crushed and scraped so the bike has low sided that way... there are factory copies available but I may see if this one is repairable... at some stage. Now for a few pics.... Not sure of the brand of rear shocks... they look to be rebuildable and also to need rebuilding lol. maybe more info will come to light when they are removed and cleaned up.
Those shockers are S & W. Not sure if they are made anymore. Good luck with the bike, it would handle a nice '70s bikini fairing nicely. https://www.ebay.com/itm/S-W-Street-Stroker-Dual-Shock-Absorber-Springs-/191671933674
Haha, me in any sort of bikini would be a horrible sight Bob Ah yes, @Murdo mentioned originally they were SW. my mechanic has a really good shock guy ( uses him for all his race cars and dirt bikes. I will eventually take them to him for checking and refurbishing. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Hey @Andych , i found some CB350F CB400F Shop Manual's and added them to the resource's area, also a Honda Four Tuning manual just in case you don't have them.
Cheers @my67xr I will have a look.. I have a couple of manuals now.. downloaded from SOHC sites in the UK and US as well as a hard copy parts book and Haynes manual.. but it doesnt hurt to have more
