Hi, This might come across as a dead stupid question but not being afraid making a fool out of myself I will post this simple question. Time for Oil change (probably due a while ago) - emptied the oil and took out the old filter. Dead sure the old filter I just took out had the blocked side of the filter inwards towards the engine and the open side of the filter facing the cover plate and spring. Is this correct ???? - I have this sneaky suspicion that the filter should go in the other way around i,e the open side facing the engine block and the closed side facing the cover plate and spring Tried to google this simple question but no luck
Hi Buddy. I suspect you are correct , the open side of the filter should be facing inwards . Via Google pictures that iv'e found of your model the open side of the filter should go over the spigot inside the filter housing and the spring / cover plate seals it together when tightened up.No doubt the Tech guy's on the forum will chime in soon to the rescue. Link below should help you out.Hope it's the correct model ?. https://www.motorcyclespareparts.eu...vl250-intruder-motorcycles/oil-pump-fuel-pump
Yea, make perfect sense having the open end facing the block, but at the same time 100% weird how the old one had been fitted - makes me wonder if the old one even been used or what other issues a wrongly fitted filter might cause - bike runs though
Looked @ this on the manual I got, but nothing, silzh, nada mentioned about the direction of the filter being inserted. Common sense from where I sit suggests the open en inward with the spring pushing on the closed end, but the filter taken off had been fitted the otherway around - hence trying to get this clarified - Again, this 125cc manual mention nothing about the direction and googling this I came out with nothing
I'm pretty sure the outer cover wouldn't fit on if the oil filter cartridge was fitted the wrong way around
Nop - fits - but with a serious dent in the closed end pushing against the feed - have worked though but no idea if anything actually have been filtered over the time this old one had been fitted - second hand pickup - not sure if I created this or if previous owner created this or if the shop it landed with recently tinkered with this - seriously no idea!
I guess you can make a lot of thing's fit where they're not supposed to when you use some force. Most people learn not to do this at kindergarten
Come across as a bit of smart ass comment - Clearly u never tried it - Let me enlight you on this.... It does not require any force what so ever to mount it the wrong way! - Will not even break the wall of the closed section - But! will result in a significant dent in the tin casing - Other than that - no issues mounting it - no force of any kind other than what the spring itself creates
I thought the small outer end of the cartridge wouldn't have fit over that raised boss section, so the cover wouldn't have sit flush? The only way someone could do it would be to try pulling the cover on by tightening the bolts. The previous owner shouldnt be doing anything mechanical.
100% agree - problem is that I cant say for sure if it was previous owner, me or the shop - still good to know that my thinking on how it should sit once the replacement took place was right. Any thoughts on what 6-12 months or so riding with a filter the wrong way could have caused? - Clearly haven't been an optimal filtering over the time - he he he But some say the suz 250cc vlc is almost bullet proof - No sign of things going wrong so far though
I haven't seen the oiling system on a Suzuki 250. That blocked off end of the cartridge is a spring loaded bypass isn't it? If the filter become's clogged up the bypass open's to let oil still flow through the oil pump and circulate through the engine. I reckon with the housing deforming it must have still let oil into the pump to keep thing's lubed, as the filter bypass plate would have been restricting oil flow, the filter would have hardly been doing it's job as well because the dirty oil would have been flowing through the pump through the deformed section. If there was no oil circulating then it would have seized the engine, i guess you are lucky it hasn't damage anything The link @2valve posted above show's that the oil filter cartridge is fitted with the large open hole toward's the engine case, note there is also another oil pickup strainer filter mesh in the bottom of the engine, it's part number 14 in the same diagram (The filter screen would be located just above the drain plug inside the engine casing) This is there to stop and big piece's of dirt, gasket paper and metal chip's etc etc from being sucked up through the oil filter/oil pump. When you get a chance or are doing your next oil change buy yourself a new clutch cover gasket. Drain the engine oil then remove the clutch cover and gasket, take the filter screen out and give it a decent clean with degreaser or replace the screen filter, there may be some metal chip's sitting in the engine case still too which you should clean out, these filter screen's are usually a neglected thing, most people just change the oil filter's. It may be listed in the original service manual that it need's to be replaced periodically or when damaged? And in reference to your original question, this is a picture of the oil filter cartridge in a Suzuki TU250X, it run's a similar system to the VL250's, and it show's the correct way to fit the cartridge. You should really replace all of the o'ring's on the cartridge filter cover etc at the same time as doing the filter to make sure no dirt/grit get's into the oil pump, this help's to prevent the oil pump prematurely failing.
