There was a huge sigh of relief when the easy out took, believe me!

The control boxes are better when they are working because as you say, you wont destroy a PGM and from the research I did, this issue was fairly uncommon. Having said that, if the valves are adjusted properly and cleaned semi-regularly you shouldn't have a problem with your PGM2.

Unfortunately I was chasing an intermittent issue which I wasn't able to pin down, so this was the better option for my sanity I think.

The other consideration is that the PGMs can be fixed by guys here in Aus if the do go pop.

    Cheers,

I never have luck with easy outs either. They never dig in and then I break them. I just drill a hole and hammer in a slightly oversized Allen key (or socket, depending on the bolt). Those IKEA Allen keys come in handy for this, or imperial Allen keys. Works good!

    Hi guys,

I am after some of the OEM Dzus clips for the one side of the fairings. Any idea if there generic ones on eBay will work or where I would get some local? Have you got any lying around @KICKERMAN360 @Brizfox

Or use Ridgid screw extractors which work on the same principle as Kickerman's great tip. Those tapered easy outs should be renamed Never-Outs.

I think I have one lying around - If I recall correctly it's attached (riveted) to one of the side bracket for the fairing. I don't think I have any more though. I'll see if I can find it and post it up. If it looks okay, and you can be bothered to ride to the GC, you can have it.

    Hey Blair,

I've never used these, they look interesting.

An impact driver is always a nice tool to have.

Cobalt drills make such light work of hardened and higher grade metals, they are a good investment.

Depending on the material you're dealing with also, heating with a small blowtorch is always beneficial, loctites soften with heat.

Tips for if you don't have anything like these available depending on the type of screw which is stuck:
to drill the heads off of totally gone screws get a cobalt drill of the correct diameter, you will not regret it.

Before drilling the heads off allen bolts you can try using imperial allen driver bits, tap them in gently with a small hammer if possible.
If it's too rounded and that doesn't work you have a set of torx bits tapping one of those in can sometimes work as they can sometimes grip in the points.

    peace out

    Glenn

    Gents,

Has anyone seen or heard of anything like this used temporarily to road tune their 2-strokes. I know these o2 sensors don't love the oil coming through, but it could be a great way to save on dyno tuning?

    Thoughts?

    Hi guys,

A well overdue update for anyone that is interested... After getting the power-valves working some time ago with the PGM2, the bike sat for a little bit before I got back around to it.

It was always difficult to start when cold, and still wasn't hauling a$$ like I knew it should, so even though I was told by someone "apparently" in the know (and who charged me a lot of money) that the crank seals were OK, I decided to see for myself. I took to ebay and ordered myself a 2-stroke racelab leak down tester:

    leak_down_tester_01.JPG

Once it arrived, it became apparent that the center seal wasn't totally cooked, but it certainly wasn't doing its job as well as it could have as I was loosing about 1psi per minute...

This was always going to be a risk on an almost 30 year old bike, and of course the model I have uses a different crank to all the other NSR250s including the later mc18. Honda also never sold the components to refurbish the cranks, but rather only sold the whole assembly, which stopped production maybe 10 years ago and are impossible to find... They also apparently used odd sized bearings and a center seal making them very difficult to repair.

Fortunately for me though, a shop in Japan called T2 Racing has released a kit to overhaul these cranks in the last couple of years or so, so naturally that is what I needed, so onto webike japan I headed and got one in the post.
    Cranch-mc18.jpg

I then ordered the remaining crank oil seal from RGV-spares and have just yesterday sent the motor off for have the bottom end freshened up. Exciting times!

To add to the excitement, Honda and Arai announed last month that they are doing an anniversary helmet for the red/white MC18 NSR250!!!! More info here: https://japan.webike.net/products/23428367.html

    nsr helmet.jpg

So unfortunately for my bank account, I ordered one of these too!

Hopefully the motor will be back next month and there will be more updates to come.

    Cheers,

I've seen that leak down tester kit from 2-stroke racelab. I had contemplated getting it myself.

Very nice helmet. I love Arai helemts.

I've seen those crank bearings from T2 racing. But I haven't heard or seen any feedback on them.
Looking forward to the crank rebuild and long term review from you on the T2 bearings.

    Well guys...

I got the motor out and down to my mate Kazu for a crank rebuild, and no sooner had I got my hopes up about getting the old girl going again, were they dashed by a message from the engine builder...

Silly me, I assumed that because the bike was an 1988 model MC18, that it would have the 88 R2J MC18 motor it left the factory with, however this wasn't the case... Apparently at some stage in the last 29 years, someone has swapped the motor out for a 1989 MC18 motor. What's 12 months difference you ask? Well apparently the centre crankshaft seal, and subsequently crankshaft bearings and crank cases.

    1988 MC18 Crank with separate centre seal(What I thought I had):
    88nsrcrank.png

1989 MC18 Crank with integrated centre seal (What I actually had):
    89 mc18.jpg

Thankfully @KICKERMAN360 has a set of cases and 2 cranks out of an 88 MC18 which I should be able to use to with my existing top end and crank rebuild kit to make a complete running engine. Fingers crossed.

    More to come later.

    Cheers

The cases are actually in great shape, and I am on a very limited time-frame so I hadn't planned on it, but I will likely rebuild the 89 engine at some stage so I will come out and see you when that happens if possible?

    Cheers,

After a bit of faffing around, I was able to get the R2J (1988) crank rebuilt in the 2J cases @KICKERMAN360 supplied, and rebuilt with my existing top end, gearbox etc etc.

    29790710_10156311385129727_5794460839981350912_o.jpg

I also acquired an LED headlight from T2 Racing in Japan which also looks great. It came with some tinted covers including a yellow one and I am considering throwing it on... Would that be period correct?

    29791756_10156311385029727_5004801849589497856_o.jpg

Threw it back in the bike with some new fluids and a new battery and fired it up last night for the first time and it sounds CRISP!! If all goes well I will button it up this weekend and look to register it next week... Fingers crossed.

    Well guys...

After finally putting the rest of the bike back together, mixing up some fuel, bleeding the brakes, giving the chain a tighten and adjusting the RC valves quickly, I took the old girl for a cheeky lap around the block... and WOW! what a little ball tearer!

It is FINALLY screaming like I knew it could! Super happy with the result which put a smile on my face it took me a few hours to get rid of! Just a few little cosmetic things to fix up and I might actually be able to say I have finished a project (This has never happened before).

Because the old girl is 30 years old and it will be used infrequently, I was thinking of getting club rego. Has anyone had experience with this/know of any appropriate clubs in SE QLD?

Here are a few piccos for the interested.

Thanks mate. I went back to the beginning of this post out of interest and it has been 5 years. haha.

I haven't done the wire splice yet either so I might do that when I am home next and see if I can bump it up from 45 to 60odd hp. I need to be on guard with 45hp so 60 should be very interesting :D
