I was having a dig at you, @Murdo because you were saying learners were going straight to the 650 and dismissing the 250, when you ride a 650. But, of course, you're not a learner. Just me trying to be a smarty-pants.

the last run on my hyosing sv250 comet i did 500 miles over a period of 10-11 hours some on the motorway some on A roads
suprisingly it was far smother at 70-75 mph than my bmw r65
i naturally cruise at 50-55 a speed that suites a 250 cc machine
surely the joy is in getting the best ride not just hanging on
In some ways it takes more skill to ride a small machine well i would love to see 125-and 250 cc back at the TT
As for the improved lap times you can easily see that the road has improved over the years
my ref being george formby no limit
    regards Trev

Looking at these numbers - the HP advantage of the litre bikes means there's lots of flat strap sections where they just make up the time.
It does pretty much look like top speed will rule at that track.
Curiously the power to weight ratio advantage of something like the Suter MMX500 isn't putting it on the podium

Well I ride both a 250 and 650 and by the time I got home from Texas after 1000Km I admit to being glad I was on the bigger bike, but for shorter runs (like 400Km) the 250 would be fine. I know people have travelled the world on postie bikes, but these days I'm needing a bit more comfort. Long time since holding a learners permit (43 years) now.

I’m fairly horrified at the injury and death toll at the iom . I’m also fairly sure that no matter how many riders are lost there the economic benefits to the locals of this crazy racing will outway the loss of life and limb . I miss the bikes at Bathurst but would be dead against it being re opened for motorcycle racing. Sometimes people really do need to be protected from themselves, I know I’d be tempted to enter a meeting there if it re opened even though I knew it was a very bad idea.

Are you similarly horrified by the everyday road toll? or has it become so mundane that the news doesn't even report crashes any more.
I think the high profile of the IOM races and the number of dead/injured riders is blown out of proportion compared to the number of riders (and even pedestrians) who are killed/injured just in getting to the IOM and home again. Imagine if one of the ferries sank and all drowned, would that be counted as an IOM tragedy too or just a bad luck?
I think we need to keep in proportion the IOM death toll as regards the rest of the world road death toll (without including any wars) and remember that these riders choose to do this.

Your life does not belong to the state. If you want to climb Mt Everest, you have to climb over the dead, literally, but you should be free to do so. I raced at Bathurst, but that Australia is now long gone.

We should be horrified by the deaths and injuries, but not to the point of fear and dread. I live in a country that would have cost many lives (black, white and any other) to explore and settle, enjoy luxuries that risked and cost lives to discover, and so forth. Not everyone is a pioneer or explorer, but we have gained because some did. Unfortunately, those people don't have new lands to find or so on, not everyone is able work in a lab, so adventure hunters go looking for trouble. At least they didn't join a gang. My 2 cents

I think everyone is horrified by our road toll regardless of what we drive / ride.
I am scared every time there is news of a motorcycle death in any state that it will be someone from one of the forums I am on.
Just tonight there was news of a horror crash on the road through the national park between 2 cars and 3 bikes. 1 death and 2 in critical condition, all of them bike riders.
I don’t believe we should concentrate on the accidents that happen on IOM but on we should celebrate the bravery and skill of all the riders who go out to more or less race themselves.

IOM is over for another year so maybe time to close this thread and wait till next year for another one.
