So I've been enjoying riding around for the last few days but I cant get the bike into neutral with the engine running. It jumps straight from first into second. The shift lever is really stiff in first and it's only when the engine is off it will free up and slip nicely into neutral. It's really only an issue when I stop the bike and want to drop the side stand but leave the engine running to open gates ect.

My Hyo was the same and the FZR takes ages to find neutral ... and easier with engine off .... no idea if its normal or a fixable problem

Sounds.like clutch adjustment ? How far from the bars is the clutch lever when the clutch starts to engage?

I was thinking I might try that. Would that be the clutch cable or is there an adjustment on the plates that I can't find reference to? And as to the second part of your question one of the previous owners fitted cheap Chinese crappy leavers and they are really loose fitting in the holders so I'm struggling to get an accurate measurement.

Did you back the adjuster right off at the lever, then take up most of the slack at the adjuster on the engine first?
Once this is done you can fine tune the adjustment at the clutch lever adjuster

Try adjusting it like i mentioned above, you'll need a couple of 12mm spanner's from memory.
Adjust the bottom part so the arm can move about 3mm toward's the cable freely, then adjust the top at the lever to suit you

Try adjusting the length of the rod on the foot lever, if they are angled too far up or down it will be difficult to change gears and find neutral.

Could also be sticky clutch plates. The one time I rode a Hyo 250 it was impossible to find neutral with the engine running, but the bike had been sitting.

Ok so I adjusted the clutch lever properly this time but the problem persisted. I took the bike to D.A. Motorcycles where they had a quick look at the bike. They did a second minor adjustment on the clutch lever and after taking it for a test ride said that it is a common issue with hyo's and I have 3 options.
1 when the bikes at a stand still blip the throttle and it drops right into neutral.
2 select neutral just before i come to a complete stop.
    3 Clutch rebuild.
Funnily enough they said even though the clutch has 30000km on it it's still behaving like it should and the rebuild would be a waste of money. I thought dealerships were ment to want to get you to spend money there?
Oh and after being there for over an hour with them looking it over and pointing out some minor things that will need doing in a year or so and giving me the above advice they sent me on my way without charging me anything. Glad to see customer service still exists.

The clutch fibre plates need to be taken out and soaked in new oil for a day or so. If the steels have impressions from the fibres, they will need to be rubbed back. Check the clutch basket for ridges on the fingers where the plates engage. If they are noticeable, take the basket off and file them flat. You will need a tool to hold the clutch basket when you torque it back on.
