After lots of measuring and searching out dimensions etc I have calculated that the mods to the steering (SRX400 Triple clamps & FZR250 38mm forks) give me a trail of 104mm which I found out this morning is the same as the SRX400. The original SRX250 has a trail of 93mm. I am not sure on what the trail would be on the SRX250 3WP as I dont have that info but... as the lower triple is the same for both 51Y and 3WP the calculated trail would be 100mm using the same front tyre I will have on. Standard tyre size is 90/80-17 where mine will be 100/80-17 for the 3WP. So hopefully the bike will still be nippy in terms of handling which is what these little things are know for. I just need to sort out handlebars for it.. I might look at cutting of the locating tab on the FZR ones and re-welding it in the correct position... I suppose I should check out the material first lol.
I decided to get out in the garage and start cleaning up the front wheel for clear coating...once I got all the tape off I decided to give it another light machine polish before the clear... so I took the rear wheel out of the rim stand and put the front one in.. then using my buff in one hand and the other controlling the rim I held the buff on the lip and it slowly moved the wheel while polishing.. I let it get a little faster and I saw something I havent notice before... looks like I have a slight bend in one side of the rim.. The rim is now polished up again but I have not clear coated it as it will need to be straightened.. Grrrrrrr One step forward two steps back.. although glad I found it now rather than after it was clear coated... or worse.. when the tyre was mounted.
So it looks like I will be taking a drive out to Smithfield later on this morning to Alderton Motorcycle Repairs. Around $100 to true the rim up to be as good as new Much cheaper than any of the replacement wheels on Fleabay (not that there were many) and they are an unknown quality as well.
I just did a quick check on EMS Track & Trace and my parts from Impex arrived at EMS sorting at Sydney yesterday.. they actually show as being out for delivery today which would be amazing considering I only paid for the freight part on Thursday last week. Unfortunately the local delivery part is left to Australia Post so when it arrives it is anyones guess...lol

There's nothing quite like genuine parts is there? I too have a stack of Yamaha parts sitting on my desk... including a complete set of fairing/windscreen bolts/bits for my R6, few gaskets, a cam chain tensioner, airbox seal... seems I got a bit carried away over the last few weeks with parts Ironically the local Yamaha dealer worked out cheaper for fork seals so I ordered those through them
Why is it so damned hard to find any original SRX400 or 600 38mm handlebars? There are none at all listed anywhere. And then when I decide I will look at using aftermarket clipons there really are not a lot of choices that will fit on top of the triple tree.. Grrrr... I may end up having to get the mounts machined and use aftermarket bars which is more hassle than I really want.
Just been doing a little light reading re putting the engine back together.. I forgot that I will need to make myself a special tool.. It is used to pull the crankshaft through one of the main bearings... I will get out sometime today and measure up what I need. Shouldnt be too hard... this is what it looks like.
Alternative is to press heated bearing onto crankshaft and when cool tap crank/bearing into heated case.
I did think about that but I don’t have an accurate way of heating the bearing / case. I don’t think I would be popular using the house oven and my little Weber BBQ just doesn’t have good enough control. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

That is the one I have. Takes a few minutes on full to get things hot. Useful for heat shrink and warming plastics too.
Purchased... now I just need to wait for the Pain killers to start working before I head out to the Garage... I still need to clean out all the alloy shavings from when the cases were machined.. strip the paint and look at plugging the old oil feed to the head and repairing the clutch cover to make it all nice and smooth. Lots to do.. plenty of time to do it
I have had the front wheel straightened and picked it up on Friday. They now have it to less than 0.5mm run out which is well inside factory spec. So $100 well spent and I only need to flatten out a few spots on the lips and re-polish it. I decided that before I did that I wanted to mock it up with the swing arm in etc, just to get my enthusiasm going again. Then today my new wheel chock arrived so I just had to assemble it. That way I could get rid of the cardboard. Now I need to get some good captive nuts so I can simply bolt it up to the trailer. It’s set up basically with my new front tire. Hopefully I will get it all set up on the trailer so I can think about a little trip to Dubbo to pick up my early 70’s CB250 (Project 3) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Finally got out into the garage today after buying an el-cheapo fan so the temperatures can be kept under control.. within reason anyway. I finished stripping down the 350 head ready for a valve job and a few thread inserts (some people should be shot the way they mangle threads) and even cleaned up some minor detonation marks in the chamber.. it was a good opportunity to give the chamber a little bit of a polish as well The exhaust valves were not too bad and all the seats look to be good.. I will have to see how the inlet valves go as they will come out of the other motor I still have to strip down.. I also had a good look at the replacement airbox I bought ages ago from Japan.. I actually got it quite cheap so I was expecting it to be a dud.. but I was pleasantly surprised.. All the filter parts were there, the filter that was in it looked to be just some foam so I am going to but some K&N Foam and cut it to suit.. the outside had a few marks so I have lightly sanded it down and will paint it gloss black.. or matt black but it will look better. And last thing I did before a Chang beer and the swimming pool called out to me was I prepped and painted the speedo housing. As standard it was like a dull chrome but it had faded and I am not a fan of chrome paint.. so I decided to use black wrinkle finish paint.. cam out OK I think. Once I wrap the instrument bracket in Carbon fibre wrap it should all look OK.. and if it doesnt.. I will remove the wrap and paint it wrinkle finish as well
Looking good Andy. I'll be keen to see how the wrapping comes along. Is there a bit of pitting around one of the inlet valve seats in the first pic?
Yes... Up close it looks almost like it has been there a while.. could potentially have had a new seat insert fitted as well.. This pic is about as close as I can get with my phone and blown up without too much pixelation. You can see where I have blended some of the other detonation (no where near as deep). The good thing is that there are no cracks as the SRX250 (early ones) were prone to cracking.
