Hi All, Lately, I've been spending a lot of time in Tasmania (longish Story). I need my tools, so I catch the Spirit of Tasmania Car Ferry to and from said southern Island. Anyhoot, can be a bit boring, but occasionally you meet some interesting people on the boat. I saw this young man ride his postie bike onto the boat and park near me, but was so tired I went straight to my bunk and slept. When we got to Port Melbourne, I went over to say hello. I asked if he'd ridden around Tasmania on his little beast and he tells me "yes, I have". I ask where is he heading to now? "Sydney" he says. I then ask where he's from? "Sydney" he replies. I say you're a brave man to ride a postie bike around Tasmania and from/to Sydney too. He then opens up about his trip and his English isn't great, but... He has been riding around Australia for the last 4 months. He has been riding in an anti-clockwise direction. He has done 27,000km to this point. His bike has a top speed of 85kph with all of his gear on. He gets 180km out of a 5.5litre tank and he keeps a 5litre tin of fuel in his storage box. The only issue he had with his bike was a front tyre needed changing. The leg back to Sydney is his home run. I noticed he had no protective clothing, no gloves and a open helmet. I wished him the very best of luck and shook his hand. A brave and adventurous young man indeed.
Posties are great bikes. I ride one to work every day. Round Australia is impressive but a bloke a few years back did Sydney to London on one.
My very first bike (well the 2nd really if you count the Acme single cylinder 2 stroke, wish I had kept that ) was a Honda 90 Step through which the posties used then... mine was an early model I think.. it had the clutch function when you clicked it into first gear and kept your foot on the shifter.. good for popping wheelies... lol Well you could if you sat all the way back almost off the seat... Great little bike... I used it for a month or so when I first got my Learners permit.
After watching that vid I feel like running out and buying a 'postie bike' and travelling the world too. Hmmm, maybe not.
Young teenager next door has just started with a postie bike ... every morning he hammers it up Piper st to school with the L plate flapping in the breeze .... his dad owns a Harley so its all downhill from there
