Hi all, I have obtained my fathers Yamaha SR250K. It has seen better days... days when I used to terrorize my home town streets almost 30 years ago. Dad purchased it new, rode it for a few years then I “confiscated” it! Oh the memories I have attached to this bike as my mates and I took ownership of our home town streets... no street was not part of any circuit we had created! As I graduated to a car and a Honda 750 four I returned the bike to my father where it has spent the last 20 odd years as an “ag” bike, no other duties other than doing the watering on the small family farm. Falling over countless times by the look of it, never washed or maintained. I’m looking forward to the challenges ahead of a tight budget and extremely minimal mechanical knowledge. So be ready, there will be a lot of questions asked! But hey, if I can get it looking respectable and riding well again, I’ll be one happy biker! I haven’t ridden since early 1996 when I sold my Honda 750 four to fund a honeymoon.... yep, was told I’d get another bike one day, well the day has arrived. And yes, 22 years later still happily married.....
Hi Buddy. So operation SR rebuild is a go !. So grateful that it will be brought back to life , well close to factory trim. If you need a hand to look for part's please do ask the forum , as a lot of us here will help out. It's good fun chasing part's down and seeing the bike coming back to life. On another matter , well done for the 22 year's married part , you must have found a keeper.
Nice to see this evolve as you go. There are some very good and talented people in here so any assistance you need can generally be sorted. I will follow this closely. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro
Ask any questions you like and we will do our best to answer. I have a complete engine for an SR if you want it.
congrats on the 22 years marriage and looking forward to riding a bike again. i started to ride again after the ex left.think it was a sense of freedom.lol.
Hi Murdo, I’m confident the engine is ok. Only issue is years ago a chain broke and punched a hole in the crank case and crank case cover. I’m sure I’ll be able to source another cover, it’s the hole in the crank case itself that may be an issue, albeit only cosmetic may be a roadworthy requirement to have it repaired/replaced. I really don’t want to change engine numbers. I’m thinking it would not be a good idea to just swap out the damaged left hand side crank case for a good condition second hand one. I assume both halves should always stay together.... the rest of the bike needs a lot of work, paint/powder coat, gaskets, seals, brakes....
You might be able to use something like this to repair it https://www.bunnings.com.au/pc-products-28g-pc-fahrenheit-epoxy-putty_p1560094 Clean up the paint off the alloy so it's bare, rough it up with some 36grit sandpaper and mix the epoxy putty then mould it to shape. Once it's dry then file or sand it back then you can paint it
The cases on engines are bored/machined as a pair and should be kept together otherwise you could have problems with bearing/shaft alignment. Either get it welded or use the epoxy putty.
Thanks for the confirmation on the pairing of the cases. Epoxy it will be at a later date. I’m thinking of possibly making the motor black, just a thought at this time. If I was to clean it up and polish it what do you suggest I use? Cheers
Being Melbourne Cup Day and all I thought l’d play with my horse.... Pretty much fully stripped now and ready for cleaning, polishing, painting, part replacement, and what ever else costs money I spose. Going to be a slow process. The easy part is done now I just have to work out how to make stuff shine, learn to paint and learn me some mechanical knowledge, I wonder how many bits I’ll have left over....and the wiring, probably fire up when I turn the lights on.... Until next time, cheers
Have a look at POR15 or KBS paint's, they make a lot suitable for restoration's and there's a shop that stock's in Campbellfield if you're ever down that way. There's black primer and top coat's that'll neutralise rust and it dry's rock hard, you can hit it with a hammer and wont chip It is also self leveling and can be brushed on if needed. https://www.kbs-coatings.com.au/product/rust-seal/
