New Member New MVX250 owner saying hi

I have no idea if the manual was ever available in English. I do know that a couple of the guys who contributed to the thread on KB are pretty clued up and have sorted some work-arounds for the known problems.
I know it's probably bad form to recommend another forum - particularly a kiwi one - but in your place I'd have a search for it. I can't post links - old and with very poor internet, sorry.
Probably a good idea to bring back here any tips or info you find...These things are rare now.

Hi guys, I'm new to this forum... I swapped a couple of RD350 exhaust pipes for 2 MVX's a few months back, found this thread and thought I might see if anyone has updates on available motor parts. Ones of the MVX's is running the other is not. The running one has a knock but the rods don't feel like they have any up and down play, I'm not sure if roller bearings knock anyway? Front pistons have about 3 - 4 thou clearance, not great but I would not have thought these would be the source of the knock either. On saying this, has to be one or the other. Any advice? Kev

Knowing nothing about MVX’s, my best advice to you, would be to capitalise on your obviously exceptional trading skills!
Swap exhausts for motorbikes-
Swap motorbikes for car-
Swap car for boat-
Swap boat for house-
..........
And so on until early retirement in about 3 months!

Seriously, good score with the bikes and good luck with the project!
Look forward to you starting a new thread with some pics.

 

Thanks for the welcome Ben. The MVX's got a bad rap here so some thought the guy that got the exhausts got the better end of the deal. Tried to give him the wife but he said the pipes would be less trouble in the long run. Bikes are in bits at the moment but I am very keen on restoring one to it's former glory, just want to get it running right. I'll post some pics when it's back together. Kev.

 

Roller bearings can - and do knock. First place to look is the small end bearings. Then crank.
There's also a possibilty given the age of the things and length of time spent stored that there's a pit in one of the main bearing races. A bit of moisture in the cases and that's a real possibility. Wash and blow dry - and spin while listening for odd noises.

 

Thanks Greg, appreciate the input. Small ends I replaced as these were pitted, but I did not replace the gudgeon pin - I will try this. I suppose need to also mic up the internal diameter of the con-rod small end, these look OK to the eye. Mains are a bit more of an exercise to inspect., Using a stethoscope it did sound top end from the two front cylinders. The gudgeon is loose in the piston. do you think the 3 - 4 thou in the pistin to bore would knock - or more rattle? If all else fails 8,500 RPM in top gear down the highway should find the problem.

 

Yes, mic it all up. Rod small end could be oval. How loose is the gudgeon ? Push fit with some resistance is ideal, if it's rattle loose in the piston, no. I seem to recall that someone on the KB thread had found a replacement piston ? Probably worth asking Econohonda what's available first anyway.

 

The GP - rattle loose, no but little resistance. Slides in without much effort. cr80 pistons are suppose to do the trick but finding the wright model I have yet to define - most are single ring and these are getting hard to find now. Malcolm's someone I overlooked - cheers

 

Try the aftermarket piston suppliers - Wiseco etc. They often have the piston dimensions on the site.
CR80 is covered by most of the aftermarket firms.

 

Wisco said they used to do these, but none left when I contacted them. I asked for dimensions but the guy I spoke to said I will need to supply these. I'll look for the site - if you have a link that would be great.

 

Google is your friend. Honda cr80 pistons gave several suppliers incl a kiwi based one with a drawing...
Which I can't link to or expand due to my piss poor rural dialup...
But it's there.
