Very cool looking helmet. Good new's that it fits you well.Getting all the visor's with the helmet is pretty impressive.Back in the old day's the only visor that was supplied was the clear one and you had to order any other's that you needed / liked.

50th anniversary of the moon landing edition? The bubble visor looks like an old-school astronaut's helmet. Does it reduce wind noise?

 

There seems to be a fairly big industry going in people purchasing too tight helmets after being advised by the "helpful" guys in the shop that they they need to be really, really tight. I was recently suckered into buying a Large size Bell RX 2 Tactical Helmet after 40 years of using XL helmets. The first 40 mins ride was a bit like medieval torture before I realised there was absolutely no way my head was ever going to comfortably fit this helmet. Of course the shop can't and wont let you exchange so its all on me. Measured the circumference of my head the way the manufacturers recommend and sure enough, 60cm, the recommended xl size. A lucky buyer scored my almost brand new helmet for almost half price and the helmet industry sold 2 new helmets to one stupid buyer. Beware of bike shop "experts"! when purchasing helmets.

 

Bell helmets are all over the shop with their sizing. Some models have up to 5 different size shells. The Bell Star range uses a slightly different sizing scale. EG Most Bell helmet size charts say Xl is 60-61cm while the Bell Star range specifies xl is 61-62cm. Never been sure how people purchase helmets sight unseen online without trying first but in my case I managed to screw up the process purchasing in person, in the shop.

 

I've worn dirtbike helmets from size xl to xs. The xl was too loose, especially for MX where it tilts forward and obstructs your view, and the xs is tight to the point of headaches after a while, and it doesn't come down far enough at the base of the skull. Sometimes you can get away with a little variation, especially if it changeable pads or extra inserts, but obviously not ideal. Best to try and buy The- and don't get caught getting a tight helmet, it just needs to be snug. And the length of your hair can vary the fit, too. The only helmet I've bought new I got for track day/race meet (my other helmet had been crash tested, chipped and marked) so I got a tight fitting helmet, not too tight, but at 150kph a found out how small it was when the helmet started pressing on my nose - to be fair, I do have a big nose. So when trying a helmet, push and pull the helmet to make sure it fits properly. I was just going to get a cheap helmet but the salesman said why spend all that other money only to cheap out or head protection? So I bought the cheapest non-deadly helmet (fibreglass shell, not just plastic, he sold me on the deforming rather than bouncing elastic).

 

Yep, helmet pricing and value is certainly a vexed issue. I’ve always used shoei helmets in the past and one protected my very feeble head at an estimated 190 kms getoff near the end of the straight at Oran park. It was only after perusing the CRASH web site( consumer rating and assessment of Safety Helmets) that I decided to look more widely. According to them some $200 helmets give better protection and are quieter than some $1200 helmets. Wonder how much helmet sales people are driven by potential mark up differences between cheaper and dearer helmets..
