So a while back I got given a 1991 GPZ250 as a project bike by a friend. It hasn't been registered in well over a decade and don't even know the last time it ran.

Another friend and I are looking to rebuild it to get more confident in our mechanical acumen.

First question after dropping the engine out is that when cranking by hand to try and find the timing marks for TDC, everything rotates pretty smoothly although after 3 cranks with the socket, the cams and chain sort of rotate freely for maybe 15 degrees after the end of the rotation from the wrench.

Wondering what the cause of that is, if it's bad and how much investigating is needed to decide if a rebuild kit is needed?

    Cheers

Cam chain tensioner has shat itself and chain is loose.
